Question about Sony Audio Players & Recorders

A DISK IS IN PLACE AND THE CD PLAYER SAYS ''DISK HOLD' FOR A FEW SECONDS AS IF IT IS GOING TO PLAY IT AND THEN A MESSAGE COMES ON THAT SAYS ''NO DISK'' AND THE CHANGER GOES ON TO THE NEXT DISK. SAME FOR ALL 100 DISKS. THE DISK GOES INTO PLACE BUT IT DOES NOT SEEM TO RECOGNIZE THAT IT IS THERE, READ AND PLAY IT.

IS IT POSSIBLE THE LENS NEED TO BE CLEANED? IT WAS WORKING O.K PLAYING DISKS ONE DAY WHEN I PUT IT INTO THE PAUSE MODE AND TURNED THE DIAL TO PLAY A DISK OUT OF SEQUENCE. IT WENT TO THAT DISK AND THE PROBLEM STARTED WHEREAS A FEW MINUTES PRIOR IT WAS PLAYING WELL. IT WAS WHEN I CHANGED THE DISK SEQUENCE THAT THE PROBLEM STARTED. ONE WOULD GUESS THAT THE LENS WOULD NOT SUDDENLY GIVE OUT BETWEEN DISK CHANGES.... IF A DISK SPACE IS EMPTY, IT READS THAT AND BYPASSES IT SAYING "NO DISK" AND GOES ON TO THE NEXT ONE. IT RECOGNIZES A DISK IS THERE AND LIFTS IT INTO POSITION TO PLAY. WHEN IT WILL NOT PLAY IT THEN SAYS "NO DISK" AND MOVES ON. IT APPEARS AS IF THE MECHANISM THAT SPINS THE DISK, IF THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS, EITHER DOES NOT SPIN IT OR THE PLAY BUTTON DOES NOT ENGAGE, ALTHOUGH THE GREEN LIGHT IS ON. IF I THEN PUT IT INTO PAUSE IT DOES NOT PAUSE. IT SAYS NO DISK AFTER A FEW SECONDS AND MOVES ON TO THE NEXT ONE..............COULD IT BE THE MICROPROCESSOR PROGRAM IS NOT SEQUENSING AS IT SHOULD. I HAVE TRIED TURNING THE POWER OFF TO ALLOW IT TO REBOOT PROPERLY BUT THAT DOES NOT SEEM TO DO ANYTHING..... I AM DISINCLINED TO ACCEPT THAT PARTS SUDDENLY GO. IT HAS BEEN MY EXPERIENCE WITH REPAIRS OF DEVICES THAT IT IS RARE PARTS, ESPECIALLY NON MOVING PARTS, SUDDENLY GO. IT IS USUALLY, IN MY EXPERIENCE, SOMETHING IS OUT OF PLACE, LIKE THE CORD IS UNPLUGGED OR THE COVER IS NOT CLOSED AS A SIMPLE EXAMPLE, AND FIXING IS A SIMPLE SOLUTION. IT IS MY EXPERIENCE THAT PARTS DO NOT SUDDENLY GIVE OUT. YEARS AGO WITH ELECTROMECHANICAL DEVICE YES, TODAY MOST OF THE TIME THE PARTS ARE NOT MOVING PARTS AND PARTS ARE NOT THE SOLUTION, IT IS THE PROCESS................... YOUR THOUGHTS?

THE DISK IS NOT SPINNING. IT GOES INTO PLACE, IS HELD THERE AND THEN THERE IS A FAINT "SPINNING" SOUND FOR A SECOND OR TWO BUT THE DISK IS NOT SPINNING. THE MECHANISM THEN TAKES THE DISK OUT AND PUTS IT BACK IN. AGAIN IT DOES NOT SPIN AND A "NO DISK" MESSAGE COMES ON AND THE DISK IS REMOVED AND PUT BACK IN ITS SLOT. IT THEN GOES ON TO LOOK FOR THE NEXT DISK IN THE NEXT SLOT.

Hello. I can assist you. A CD player that is acting up like yours is generally has one of two issues. If your CD player is sitting next to other components, it is possible that the heat of the other components is causing the problem. to check this out just move your cd player away from the rest so it is cool and see if it functions properly. if it does not, then you have a bad component and will most likely have to take it to the repair shop unless you have the equipment to isolate the bad component, usually an oscilloscope and a can of circuit chiller.
Regards, Joe

Hello: There may be a problem with the spindle motor, The disk will not be read if the spindle moter does not spin the disk, If you listen close you should be able to hear the pickup of the laser, may sound like a slight clicking sound as the laser comes on to read the TOC. (Table of Contents) on the disc. Also you should hear the spindle motor spin the disc, if not then the spindle motor control driver board is faulty, and or the laser assembly itself, which includes the spindle motor. Sony calls this the laser chassis assembly.

This could very well be the case as you decribed. but considering all you did was pause the disc and changed to play a disc out of squence, this should not be mechnical. There are sensors on the tray to let the microprocessor know whether a disk is in a slot of the tray or not. If the unit picks up a disk in a slot then the unit and sensors are relaying to the microprocessor that the tray is occupied. These parts I know are not faulty, try taking all of the discs out and just leaving maybe five or six disc's in various slots on the tray, and see if it indicates the slots where there are actual disc's. If it picks one up and try to play it then everything up to this point is fine. Now at this point the microprocessor sends the signal that a disk is ready to play and sends the signal to spin the disc to the motor control circuits. At the same time it is monitoring the speed of the spin, if it has reached its predetermined speed the laser comes on and begins to convert the digital information on the disk to analog, and then back to digital. Laser assembly can go bad at anytime, there is no granutee as to the life of the optics. Spindle motor brushings can cause low spin rates and the error detect circuits with send a no disk found signal to the microprocessor and will keep cycling through the process until it reaches the max disk capacity. Try taking the top of the unit off and check the mechnical functions to see if they are operating right, make sure the clamper is clamping the disk Above the Optis Lens. I have also seen on many occassions where the Spindle has sliped slightly down the motor shaft causing no spin as the disc is to close to the Optics lens. Your problem does not seem mechnical to me at this point as it was playing fine, and the only thing you did was all electrical in nature. Also remember with the top off, the unit may operate eraticly as there is light from the outside hitting sensors. Try placing the cover top upside down on top of the unit while you check functions to minmize external light from hitting sensors.

Most likely, the lens is not working, it cant SEE the discs. you have to get it serviced or order the parts and service it yourself.

Its also possible the motor that spins the discs has failed. but if that were the case youd likely see "DISC ERROR".

Since you are seeing "NO DISC" it is most likely the laser lens has failed.

Well, whether you wish to believe it or not, even in the event of unlikelihood, things break. I am a PC tech by trade, and I deal with "it just stopped working" every day. You may wish to inspect the system for any popped capacitors (they will appear swollen, as if they have, or are about to burst), especially if you are convinced it is NOT the optical apparatus itself. If it is under warranty, get it exchanged. Since it was saying "NO DISC" for all 100 discs, the logical assumption was that the lens was not able to see, which could indicate it is dirty, or, could indicate it is malfunctioning. When I suggested you have it serviced, I naturally assumed you had already tried using a cd lens cleaning kit, as that is the logical course of action to pursue. If you have NOT done this, I urge you to invest in one, attempt a cleaning, and retry the device.

Based on what you have said and spoke with others about, I would have to agree with Techman007. If you see my first possible solution, you will notice that I also said it could be the motor:

Its also possible the motor that spins the discs has failed. but if that were the case youd likely see "DISC ERROR".

I am sorry that the device has failed. I believe you can get it replaced if it is still under warranty. Most of those items come with either 90 day or 1 year warranty of some sort. Good luck, and Happy Holidays.

CD player plays some CD but some of the others it spins them and tosses them off the cone

The center cone on the hub could be a problem if the player was not for the right juke. Each brand has their own style. (If you still have the old player, check and make sure the the hubs are the same.) The center cone on the hubs are glued in place so if they are different you might be able to pop the old one off and replace it to the new player. One other problem could also be the magnetic pressure disk that is supposed to hold the disk on the hub. Is it centered in the hold down arm or does it rub the sides? Does the disk wobble as it spins? The magnetic disk is supposed to hold it down on the hub to prevent it from wobbling and coming off the turntable.

Cd player error

so is this a stock RAD/cd?
stock JBL 6 disk player in dash>? or? what? name and model #
mp3 and wma format. but not DVD
or
JBL premium 4-disc in-dash CD changer
io the single disc player, 3 kinds sold. new.

and now comes the big question.
TELLS where you got the disk, or name it, or tell how it was made if home made. we dont know that.

is said CD a CDDA? or not. (always try CDDA first)
is CD a real music disc. from a real store, CDDA, is that.
or CDR, or DVDr, or CDRW, or other record-able media
is music MP3? files.
see, the old units dont play modern media.

try 2 real discs, not scratched.
do they play?
one other way, is to name the radio, brand, like JBL then get the
p/n off it. (hard) then look up the product data sheet on it,
bingo, what it can and can not do is there.

but this does it all, mostly
does what yours will not do.

When i turn on my apple 3rd gen 20gb ipod it comes up with the apple sign and after a few seconds it comes up with and ipod with a sad face and www.apple.com/support/ipod underneath. What do i do??

The first thing is to connect your iPod to the computer it is paired with. When iTunes recognizes it, click the button returning it to factory settings. This will delete all data from your iPod, but should repair any software problems.
If iTunes is having a problem recognizing the iPod, than place it into Disk Mode: (From http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/earlier/)
  1. Before placing the iPod into disk mode, you should verify that it is charged.
  2. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  3. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears
  5. Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not disconnect"

If you are having difficulty putting the iPod model into disk mode, set it on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.

If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.
