On my Timex Expedition, not exactly an Ironman, there is a tiny screw on one side of a metal "clip" that holds the battery in place under a plastic/tape cover. Unscrew that screw, carefully. The other end slides into a slot opposite the screw. Replace the battery, noting the same side up as the one that comes out (CR 2016 in my case, about $2,99 at King Soopers.) Put the "slot tab" of the metal clip into the slot while holding the screw end higher up, then push down on the screw end and screw it in. The clip piece sorts of "arches over" the battery. I then replaced the plastic piece, then the back cover. But I had no beeps or sound, so, per this site, elsewhere, I turned the back cover 180 degrees and then it worked perfectly!
You will need to look for any screws holding down a plate over the battery. Sometimes these only need to be loosened and sometimes they have to be removed. Sometimes the plate can be lifter slightly and the battery slide out from underneath. I hope this helps you. Best luck
SOURCE: how do you unlatch the metal piece that holds the battery in?
If you see no screws holding the contact (you say metal piece), follow all the way down to that contact in to watch movement and you will find the point where it is hooked on to a tiny plastic hook.
Take fine pointed tweezers and pull the contact leg outwards. This will release the contact and the battery.
