The sound on my Dell W4200 is crackling some times even when the sound is on mute. Sometimes the sound is fine, other times no sound and other times the crackling noise. Any idea what problem may be?

Hi There,
Crackling sound is often an indication of bad connections to the speakers. Are you listening with the built-in speakers or through an external amplifier?
If you are listening through an external amplifier or speakers, check all of the connections to make sure the cables are properly inserted, and wiggle the cables from each end and the middle to see if that reproduces the symptoms. Sometimes a cable can become damaged from being squashed or bent, and it may be as simple as replacing the faulty cable with a new one.
If you are listening with the built-in speakers the situation might be harder to identify and correct. Sometimes it is as simple as nearby wireless devices or radio towers causing interference with the speaker. You can try repositioning wireless devices such as computer routers, cordless landline phones or radios to see if that helps.
However, over time the solder used to connect the internal components can wear and sometimes break the connection. For this type of situation repair is usually the only option. If the warranty of your TV has expired you may have to take it to a local TV service center. Typically a loose solder joint is easy to identify and fix, so the repair bill should not be high.
Please post back with your results.

I had a dell 2700 computer working with altec asc295 speakers and the dell crashed. i connected the acs295 speakers to my other dell 4700 and they don't operate.

First the easy things. Are you sure you plugged the speakers in the correct socket.
Are you sure the speakers are plugged in and the power switch on.
Is the volume turned up on the speakers.
Is the volume turned up on the computer, Not just the program you're running but also from the tiny speaker icon at the bottom right of your screen.
Have you checked the sound card (if it's not a built in system) is correctly inserted.
It sometimes helps, if it's a plug in card to remove the card, clean the card's contacts with clean white paper and then plug the card back in.
Check the card is actually working by plugging in another set of borrowed speakers.
Ensure you have drivers loaded for the sound card.
Check the system manager in your control panel and make sure there's no conflicts.

BE CAREFUL WITH THIS ONE......

Grab an almost flat AA or AAA battery and connect intemittedly one lead of the speaker to one end and the other wire to the opposite end of the battery. If you hear a clear crackle in time with the touching of the wires then the speaker should be OK. If you have a multimeter, switch it to OHMS and check the speakers on it's low setting. It should register around 4 Ohms. Even on high settings the meter will show a bunch of zeros or if it's a meter the needle will swing right across the dial.

If all these pass then I would be checking with a substitute sound card. But this would involve loading the appropriate drivers too.

Good luck.

Dell Dimension 4700 PC Speaker No Sound

Check to make sure all cables are connected. After this you will need to click on your sound card properties and set it to 5.1. which will allow all the speakers to play.

Please note you will need to have a card that supports 5.1 sound I do not believe the stock card in the Dell supports this feature which could be the problem.

What's a good replacement for Dell Dimension 4700 speakers (AS500PA) that crackle too much to turn on?

The best replacement would be a Mac. They are easy to use, take up less space than that big tower, have a beautiful screen, and only one cable, (if you use a wireless mouse and keyboard). Not to mention, with the new operating system, Snow Leopard, you can run Windows with the help of Boot Camp!

And how much are those old Windows headaches worth to you? Believe me, I had PCs for over 20 years, and just converted to the Mac. It's like night and day. No more Windows headaches, my computer is actually fun again!

Dimension 4700 my headphones work fine but i cant

Are you have the headphones and speakers both pluged in? When you plug in headphones the speakers get muted. You need to change your sound settings back to your sound card if you use usb headphones. The plug on the front of the 4700 also automatically mutes the speakers.

I cannot get my speaker to work on my dell dimension 4700. Speakers will work on other computer. Just had the hardrive switched on computer but they said that the speakers were working there. I have tried...

Hi,
The speaker jack is coloured green on newer computers and usually sits alongside a blue and a pink jack. Firstly, make sure your speakers are plugged into the green socket. If this doesn't solve the problem, you need to check in "device manager to make sure your sound card is installed correctly. Make sure the sound card is listed in "device manager" then make sure there is no yellow dot next to your sound card. If there is a yellow dot next to your device, it's a simple matter of downloading the correct driver for the sound card. If you need further assistance regarding this don't hesitate to ask me.
Best wishes,

Speakers crackling and making a 'clicking' sound when volume high

The cable you are using to connect to the speakers could be duff or the connectors could just be dirty.  clean the connectors and push it in and out of the socket repeadedly to ensure you have a good connection.  Or you could try a different cable.
