Sometimes when a battery is low or connections at the battery are dirty, you will hear a click,
that is the solenoid activating, but the battery voltage is low enough that the starter will not turn.
Sometimes this condition has a chatter.

Easiest test for this situation is jump start from you automobile, or charge the battery for an hour,
and see what happens from there.

My yard machine tractor does nothing when I turn the key. The battery is new. However the tractor is 12 years old. Could this be the alternator?

If it does nothing when you turn the key then replacing an alternator will not help. Numerous things could be causing this condition. I will try to cover a few. Make sure your PTO for the blades is disengaged and the clutch pedal is depressed. Make sure your battery voltage and all connections are good. Also make sure it is hooked up correctly. There is a fuse, usually near the solenoid, you need to check that. If all the above is good check to see if you have voltage going to the solenoid: There is a small wire that hooks to a spade terminal, you need to have 12 volts on this wire when the key is in the start position. If you do not, then you need to troubleshoot your safety switched. If you have 12 volts, then you may have a bad solenoid. Good luck, hope this gets you in the right direction.

Good morning Brian.

You need to have a current tester to make sure. If you don't have one, you can buy a cheap one for less than $10 that will get the job done.
1. Test the battery. Make sure you have at least 12 volts DC across the terminals. If not, charge the battery and retest. Even new batteries can be discharged or defective.

2. Test the voltage at the solenoid. You need at least 12 volts to each of the terminals when the key is engaged to the start position. You may need a helper to turn the key while you test the current. Failure to get current to the lower terminal on the solenoid is usually caused by a defective ignition switch or a defective/dirty safety switch. Most mowers have at least 3 safety switches. Your clicking noise is probably the solenoid engaging and is a normal noise.

3. Test the voltage at the starter. You need at least 11.2 volts at the terminal on the starter motor. If you have enough current, and the starter is still not spinning, then you have a bad starter. Sometimes a failing starter can be used a few more times by lightly tapping on the side of the starter motor with the wooden handle of a hammer. If the brushes in the starter are sticking, then tapping on the side will occasionally allow the starter to work. This is a very short-term repair. The starter will either need to be rebuilt or replaced.

Good luck.

Most likely you have a short in the ignition (key) switch. Disconnect the battery first! Then look at the wires behind the ignition switch for burned or missing insulation. If all that looks OK, I would replace the ignition switch. It is also possible that your solenoid/starter assembly has failed and the solenoid has stuck in the 'on' position; but that will cost more to replace so I wouldn't start there.

The starter solenoid is most likely the clicking you hear. It has contacts inside which go bad. These are about $10 and easily replaced. Just follow the + battery cable and it will lead you to the solenoid.

The starter solenoid sounds to be bad. Follow the + cable from the starter and it will lead to the solenoid. This is usually about $10. The battery produces power to the solenoid which then produces power to kick the starter over. The clicking is the contacts in the solenoid you are hearing.

Check your seat, drive safety switches. Can you turn the engine with jumper cables attached to the starter? It won't start, but should turn over, one of your safety switches is not working.

Husqvarna zero turn mower won't start

Usually if all you hear is a clicking noise, it is the solenoid itself that has gone bad...if you can jump the solenoid and the mower turns over, it is the solenoid.
