Question about Sony CDP-CX400 400-Disc CD Changer

Playback jumps around

I have a Sony CDP CX 400 that I've owned for several years but rarely used when it started to skip and jump ahead during playback. I took it to a qualified repair shop and after 4 weeks the repairman said he could not reproduce the problem. I listened to it with him and sure enough it was not skipping. As soon as I go it home it started doing it again. My guess is that the CD reader is not properly aligned to the disc when during playback, but I'm not sure how to correct the problem. Can anyone give me directions on how to repair this.

I have the same issue, and was just working on it today. It seems that the carriage isn't stable, and the disc moves too much. I also saw the laser moving in and out, as if it was having trouble trying to focus.

Mine will start play (sometimes), but then skip ahead, then stop playing. I love this unit, but am unable to fix. Are there any free service manuals or tips?

Help! I've got 280 discs in my 400 disc player and now when I try to play any of the discs, it starts to stutter and skip around on the disc!! Any solution other than shipping it back to Sony?

No amount of cleaning has fixed the problem of skipping. Sometimes it skips foreward, somtimes it skips back and repears 2 to 10 seconds of the disk. The player is full and treats all of the disks the same.

I've had my CX400 changer for 5-6 years now and only recently has it begun to have a skipping problem...and the problem only happens on the first track of the CD (and not on any other track). Is the player just wearing out...is it dust (or dirty0 insides and needs to be cleaned...is it even worth repairing? Thanks.

Look like Mike was right. Here's what happened with me. My CDP-CX400 has been sitting idle for about two years. I probably had 300 plis CD's in the unit. Before it sat idle for a long time, it was working fine. When I began to use it again, it was horrible. Skipping everywhere. I did the contact spray several times with no luck. FYI be sure the cleaner/spray you use contains NO lubricant. It's gotta clean & dry. OK...about to give up I sprayed it a third time with focus on plastic gears, tracks etc. So the next mornining..I tried something different. I loaded about 20 CD's and put it on "Shuffle Mode" Ran it all day yesterday.....Worked fine,. Started it today. Fine so far. Besides the contact spray...I think sliding black box with the lazer needed a good "work out" Not using it for so long probably caused the problem. I hope it continues to be fixed. Here's something to be aware of. I've had several of these Sony players. due to all the movement with CD's moving in & out...these players WILL scratch your CD's. I learned that the hard way. Here's a thought. I ended up making copies of my store bought CD's thus keeping my originals out of there! Hope I was some help. Good Luck, Johnny G

SOURCE: sony megastorage 300 cd changer

Hi There are many things that can cause your problem, I can tell you the most likely ones, but I recommend you don't take the unit apart, as the mech. in a 300 disk changer is complicated & delicate, and you may just cost yourself alot more money than getting it repaired. The symptoms you sescribe can be caused by failing laser pickup, dirty laser lense (especially if you've done home renvations with drywall), split drive gear that moves the laser on the sled rails, or even a hair or piece of dirt in the gear teeth of that same gear. The unit will play fine, until it hits the tooth where the debris are, then it skips, or jumps back a bit and starts again until it hits the same spot. Also..badly scratched or finger printed disks will cause that, but that is the first thing most people check. I wish it was something you could repair yourself, but my best advise is to take it to a reputable repair shop, and hope it is not a bad laser, as that is a fairly expensive repair. Hope this helps, Good Luck!

SOURCE: Lens Knocking Against The CD - All CDs skip or diginoise then fail.

Take the small back cover off and take some electrical grade contact cleaner and spray all around the lens area, that worked for me.

SOURCE: music speeds up,skips pulsating noise

Ok, this is optical lens assembly failure. the lens assembly is a whole device that runs on a rail with rail motor. the spin motor is also attached to this Assembly as well. the entire assembly will need to be replace due to the damage that has occurred.

Replacing the optical lens assembly will fix all the issues you stated.

Sony cdp cx 355 skips on first track

Could be some dust or debris in the unit. Also be careful that you are not putting fingermarks near the hole section of each CD you put in, as the CD plays from the centre out.

CDP CX355 Seems to Skip- sound similar to what happens with LP record when dirty.

If the player "skips" after 15+ seconds the likely problem is the split rack&pinion used to position the laser. The split rack is sprung to remove play or backlash when meshing with the driver cog. This split rack can jump cogs over time, eventually becoming ineffective. The solution is to remove the laser assembly and gently disengage the driver cog, compress the split rack and re-engage the driver cog. This should solve the skipping problem.

ILO Recorder DVD05R - Playback jumps 10min, 20 min and more...

Does the disc still play in other dvd player? My ILO has always been picky to play rentals so I just have a cheap COBY player hooked up to front inputs of my ILO. I use it to watch the dvds, only use the Ilo to record. Saves wear and tear on my ILO but cannot find a universal remote to operate them both and my tv. If it still records okay thats what I would do, just watch the discs in a secondary unit. Sounds like time to start shopping for new recorder.

"trying to record during playback"?... You can't record while playbacking in stereo mode, only in multitrack mode.
