Question about Sony CDP-CX400 400-Disc CD Changer
I have a Sony CDP CX 400 that I've owned for several years but rarely used when it started to skip and jump ahead during playback. I took it to a qualified repair shop and after 4 weeks the repairman said he could not reproduce the problem. I listened to it with him and sure enough it was not skipping. As soon as I go it home it started doing it again. My guess is that the CD reader is not properly aligned to the disc when during playback, but I'm not sure how to correct the problem. Can anyone give me directions on how to repair this.
Pull the small back cover off and Purchase a can of CRC Electrical Grade Contact Cleaner, un plug the unit all around the len board and the whole genral area that should take care of the problem! it did for me.

Look like Mike was right. Here's what happened with me. My CDP-CX400 has been sitting idle for about two years. I probably had 300 plis CD's in the unit. Before it sat idle for a long time, it was working fine. When I began to use it again, it was horrible. Skipping everywhere. I did the contact spray several times with no luck. FYI be sure the cleaner/spray you use contains NO lubricant. It's gotta clean & dry. OK...about to give up I sprayed it a third time with focus on plastic gears, tracks etc. So the next mornining..I tried something different. I loaded about 20 CD's and put it on "Shuffle Mode" Ran it all day yesterday.....Worked fine,. Started it today. Fine so far. Besides the contact spray...I think sliding black box with the lazer needed a good "work out" Not using it for so long probably caused the problem. I hope it continues to be fixed. Here's something to be aware of. I've had several of these Sony players. due to all the movement with CD's moving in & out...these players WILL scratch your CD's. I learned that the hard way. Here's a thought. I ended up making copies of my store bought CD's thus keeping my originals out of there! Hope I was some help. Good Luck, Johnny G

Hi There are many things that can cause your problem, I can tell you the most likely ones, but I recommend you don't take the unit apart, as the mech. in a 300 disk changer is complicated & delicate, and you may just cost yourself alot more money than getting it repaired. The symptoms you sescribe can be caused by failing laser pickup, dirty laser lense (especially if you've done home renvations with drywall), split drive gear that moves the laser on the sled rails, or even a hair or piece of dirt in the gear teeth of that same gear. The unit will play fine, until it hits the tooth where the debris are, then it skips, or jumps back a bit and starts again until it hits the same spot. Also..badly scratched or finger printed disks will cause that, but that is the first thing most people check. I wish it was something you could repair yourself, but my best advise is to take it to a reputable repair shop, and hope it is not a bad laser, as that is a fairly expensive repair. Hope this helps, Good Luck!

Take the small back cover off and take some electrical grade contact cleaner and spray all around the lens area, that worked for me.

Ok, this is optical lens assembly failure. the lens assembly is a whole device that runs on a rail with rail motor. the spin motor is also attached to this Assembly as well. the entire assembly will need to be replace due to the damage that has occurred.
Replacing the optical lens assembly will fix all the issues you stated.
