Question about Dell (073VDD) SCSI Controller

1 Answer

I have a Dell 8400 3.8 ghz. CPU and I added two SCSI 10K RPM 68 Pin Drives with an Adaptec 29160N Controller. This systems runs great. Now, I am upgrading this system to replace the two 10K RPM Drives with two 15K drives. I know that my SCSI 160 (68 Pin) Controller has to be upgraded to a SCSI 320 Controller. In researching this, I found out that there are a huge variety of makes and models. With the above system, which make and model SCSI 320 68 Pin Controller Card should I purchase? Thank You. Carl

Well, that's like asking what is better: a Chevy or a Ford? Some people think Chevy is better, some like the Fords. (I love Fords personally). Anyhow, the thing to do in this case is actually see if consumer reports (or a PC hardware review website of some sort) has any reviews of the hardware brands and specs. Also, with SCSI, make sure you have good cables. I've seen plotters at the local newspaper just DIE because of a bum cable, (after swapping the SCSI cards of course). But at any rate, the thing to do is go with a brand that you trust, something that has been around like Intel or 3com, and not some fly-by-night deal, like flung-whoo-plah (i just made that up, but you get what I mean). My point is, get one that's reputable. Also, usually spending more money usually means a better chip set. I would price them, lowest to highest, and get the one thats about 70 to 80 percent of the highest one. Example, if some cards cost 30 dollars and others cost $100, then id get one that cost around 70 to 80. That means (to me) that it likely has a good solid chipset, and should last for years, but doesnt have a lot of unecessary features, like a remote controlled interface for your shoelaces... lol. I hope that helps.

How can I find the Windows Server 2008 driver files for the Adaptec CERC SATA1.5/6ch?

OK, EZPZ.
These drivers will install when you first start installing windows 2008 server. You'll see a option that says: Hit F4 for any further drivers needed for windows to install. I think it's F4. You can place these drivers on a thumb drive OR a CD - you must extract the files on to a thumb drive. At the very start of the windows install you'll see the option for additional drivers.

First screen - Success

SCSI - Yes, that is correct. Correct, but This isn't a SCSI controller

If you choose the SCSI driver from Dell, on the disk, you won't get...

This screen. This screen means that windows could not find any driver for your drive and there for, you must start over - Same steps.
But make sure you choose the correct driver - you might have to try a few that are in the list.

Greatest of luck - EZPZ

What kind of hard drive do I need for an acer aspire 4315? From what I have found it needs to be 68 pin, is there anything else? I have replaced a few hard drives and this is an easy fix (much easier than...

A hard drive with 68 pins is a wide SCSI-3 hard drive device.
SCSI drives need a SCSI controller (eg in this case an Adaptec SCSI-3 controller) and the SCSI ID of each hard drive can be set from 0 to 7. The ID setting on the hard drive is jumpered by 3 x 2 pin configuration using a binary configuration to get the 8 SCSI ID combinations.
Depending upon the length of the cable and the number of connectors on the cable, it can support quite a number of SCSI hard drives, whereas an IDE cable only supports 2 drives per cable.

Is Termination Necessary?

Usually, SCSI devices come with the termination built into the device. Older devices actually had two or three terminating resistor packs plugged into the card or drive circuit board. More modern ones have DIP switches to turn the termination on or off.
Essentially, on a SCSI daisy chain ribbon cable with multiple connectors, only the first and last physical device needs to be terminated. Usually SCSI devices come from the factory already terminated. If you have only one device to connect check and see if there is a DIP switch to change. I would go ahead and connect it. If it works, it's probably already set properly.
That said, I have worked with daisy chains of SCSI devices where a particular device would only work if it were terminated even if it was in the middle of the chain. s

Not getting a drive letter from Compaq SCSI RAID setup

Did you see any new drives in the disk managemen screen? To get to the disk management, hold window key down and hit 'R', then type diskmgmt.msc and hit enter.

If you do see the drive in the lower half of the screen, you need to initialize the drive either as dynamic disk or basic disk. Then you need to add a new partition and format it.

Good luck.

Adaptec 29160n vista support issue

vista has a major issue with allowing even the admin to move and transfer files and folders.
I have run across a fix that helped me gain more control, but you probable need to get drivers for Vista from the scsi controler card manufacturer.
and for the drives.
Vista is a terribly restrictive OS.
WARNING: please do not do this if you can't reverse it on your own if needed. Editing your registry can be risky so use extreme caution.
