Changing ram is good to make your computer more faster but sometomes it do cause harm, before you change your system was working fine, but you have already upgrade to a higher ram but now you recieve more crashes unlike before, may its time to re install your windows or have it reformated sudden changes in a computer hardware cause these problems this is incompatibility issues between the hardware and software that causes these problems to appear

    P4VXASD-R VIA Apollo P4X266-new 1G DDR gets 3 beeps

Well you said you used 256+128 and thats lower than 1gb. So try sticking in one of the stick and run it, see how it is. Then try the other, if both are working fine by themself then try cleaning your board with a nonscrathing cloth (or q-tip).

Lastly, just double check if your motherboard runs that kingston type, the pc2100.

As for your memory goes, os 2k can run up to 4gb of ram.

    RAM cuantity

The motherboard you mentioned supports DDR1 RAM.

For windows xp and general application 512 MB is enough.
But if you use memory intensive applications like image/video editing then you can opt for 1-2 GB RAM.

    I NEED RAM

    Hi zouganeli,

You can install one, two or three modules. Each memory module can hold a maximum capacity of 128 MB of standard SDRAM chips, or 256 MB of registered SDRAM chips so maximum memory capacity is 384 MB of standard SDRAM memory or 768 MB registered SDRAM memory.

    Hope that helps

    Take care,

    Michael

    P4vmm2 motherboard

you can add up to 2 gb RAM using either 2 x 184 Pin DIMMs or 2 x 168 Pin SDRAM DIMMs. However that MB does support pc400. The supported RAM speeds are 100, 133, 200, and 266 MHz

You can buy a pair of Kingston 256 MB DDR SDRAM PC2100 (266 MHz) from the kingston website for under $50
    part no: KVR266X64C25/256

Kingston is a well known and respected manufacturer of memory.
