Question about Heating & Cooling

2 Answers

Hi I have an NEC Split Air Conditioner. Model RIH6867. Power rating - 6.8Kw Cooling Capacity 8.2Kw Heating Capacity. Single Phase for 240Volt environment. I only have the outdoor unit. It is new. But missing the complete indoor assembly unit and remote. Can I substitute other indoor units to make this work. NEC no-longer supports their appliance division. Regards Ash

    Thanks for your reply.

I sort of gathered they all work under the same principal and use the same copper pipes. However, what I wasn't sure about is how the different electronic boards within the indoor units control the valves and if there are any differences in them.

    Regards

    Ash

The other problem I have is that I can not find an indoor unit with exactly 6.8KW cooling and 8.2KW heating.

Also the Amps are slightly varied between the different models.

    Regards

    Ash

Hi Ash,

Off the cuff, I would say no to being able to use any other indoor unit.

But, with a bit of work and research, you might be able to connect 2 systems, even if different manufacturers, together. The compressor / condenser, etc (outdoor unit) doesn't really depend on indoor unit in order to do its job. As long as the cooling capacity are matched between the two, the outdoor unit should function problem free.

Your unit is going to be a bit different though. Your compressor is a variable speed compressor (higher efficiency). The inverter is located inside the outdoor unit, but the controls are located inside the indoor unit. You *might* be able to remove the inverter completely and lose some efficiency. Once you start going down this path, you will quickly find that it would be cheaper to buy another unit altogether, rather than to keep paying for labor to modify, and additional / parts needed. This approach may be worthwhile if you already have an evaporator that is ready to go, and is appropriately matched as far as capacity.

May I suggest that you check with the hotels and motels that are in your area. These have been used in such places in the past, they are quite popular for retrofits where a large window was not in place, or appropriate. Maintenance departments typically keep a few units on hand for spare parts and such. I don't know how popular your model is, but it is worth a shot.

I did find some information that might help:
Spare parts are available here, shipping may be outrageous.

At the very least, you should be able to get part numbers for what you need.

Split A/C systems all work the same. The outside unit can be connected to any inside unit. You'll have to make sure they have similar ratings

You contact the manufacturer and they will refer you to an authorized repair station in your area. Just get a price up front for the part and labor, if any, so you can make a decision regarding the matter.

Voltage 1phase or 3 phase 240 volts BTUs M# 585epo36o75

Looking at the model number, it appears to be a 3 ton. (36,000 btu) Most all residential units are single phase and most all commercial are 3 phase. One way to tell, look to see if the compressor has a capacitor. 3 phase never use capacitors on the compressors as they are not needed. Some residential units have a "Dual" capacitor. That is, it has 3 terminals, 1 common, 1 for condenser fan motor, and 1 for the compressor. Also, this info should be printed on the unit's lable.
Good Luck and hope this helps.

I don't have a diagram, but maybe I can help you. You have 2 compressors, o.k. 2 stage system. A single phase contactor? do you mean a single pole, one side breaks, the other is always hot? Speaking of phases, is this a commercial unit with 3 phase? Also, Each compressor needs a separate contactor to carry the load. What is the question?
