Question about Whirlpool Refrigerators

1 Answer

My refrigerator is not working. I have a side by side refrigerator and suddenly it stopped working. It is on but the little light near the temp control is red I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Hi, Is there ice/frost build up at the rear inside of the freezer?. Your problem is going to be with your defrost system. I will also assume you have the ability to repair this yourself.
This is going to be one of three problems with your refrigerator, 1st thing to do is remove shelf’s and panel in the back of the Freezer. You may see ice build up on the evaporator, don't worry get a hair dryer and melt the ice.
Next locate the wires for the defrost heater and using a multi-meter/ohms meter test the heater for continuity (it should read infinite) if the defrost heater is bad replace it.
This is what a typical defrost heater looks like:

If the heater is good test the defrost thermostat. This should normally be done when the evaporator is still covered with ice since it will only activate at 40f - 50f depending on the thermostat. When tested with the ohms meter at below 40f it will read infinite. It is normally clipped to the upper right of the evaporator and look something like this:
4462625.jpg The next possible problem could be the defrost timer. If you have tested the heater and thermostat and they have tested good next find the defrost timer, If your refrigerator has a mechanical one it will either be located inside the control panel in the fridge or behind the panel below the doors. Once you have located it advance the dial until you hear a click. This will initiate the defrost cycle. If your heater begins to get hot this will tell you that your timer has stalled and needs to be replaced. A typical mechanical timer looks like this: If your refrigerator has a digital defrost timer you should locate the tech sheet. Normally you can find this behind the panel under the doors. It will tell you how to initiate a manual defrost cycle. As before if the heater gets hot you will have to replace the mother board normally located behind a panel at the rear of your refrigerator.
If your fridge is warm and there is no build up of frost/ice on the back panel inside the freezer then you problem is most likely going to be the evaporator fan, have you heard the fan running in the past few hours? if you are not sure pull the panel out to where you can see fan and watch it over the space of an hour to see if it turns. If you don’t see it turning replace the motor. This is what a typMy refrigerator is not working - a4183d8.pngator fan looks like:

Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to start.
Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload relay. Check to see if the condenser fan at the back underneath near the compressor is running. If no check fan.

Are the condenser coils near there warm or room temp. should be warm

Is the evaporator fan in the freezer running. It blows cold air into the fridge side through a damper in the wall between the freezer and fridge. Make sure the damper is open.

Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL) or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR PROBLEM).

The start device on some models of refridgerator for maytag and whirlpool have been recalled. If your appliance was manufactured in the last 5-10 years you may be having an issue with this component. Mine recently caught on fire at this device that is located near the compressor. If you would like to be a part of the petition for a recall on this appliance contact me at jboooor@hotmail.com

Motor stopped running but lights & ice maker OK

this is most likely a bad condenser fan motor. pull refrig from wall remove compartment cover on rear and inspect the fan that cools the compressor. it is either jammed or seized up and needs replacing. while your at it you may want to clean the condenser coils as well they most likely have dust and lint build up on them. this motor is fairly easy to replace yourself if your mechanicaly inclined the part number should be 833697blade and can be purchased online, at a local appliance parts supply house, or thru a sears parts and servie center near you.
to keep the unit working until you get it repaired you can put a house fan blowing on the compressor area to keep it cool and this will get temps back to normal and cool down that center frame as well.
Thanks Peyton..

Samsung side by side srs580dw stops freezing and chilling

Since the temps on the display don't show correctly I'd assume something is wrong with that. If the temps are sending info out that the unit is OK and at proper temp (when it's not) then the compressor won't turn on because it thinks the fridge is cold enough. Soooo... I'd suspect that control board. It's item 48 on this diagram http://www.partselect.com/Schematics/Maytag/SS10-2.gif
