What you are reading is the voltage coming from the trickle charger located in the generators control panel. Because these batterys are on a constant trickle charge they tend to evaporate the water out of them quicker.

We make it a habit to check the battery water level every 6 months and top off with distilled water when necessary. Because you are topping these batteries off more frequently the battery acid become diluted causing the battery not to last as long. So at least every 6 months I would also check the specific gravity of each cell in the battery as well as load testing it.

Why won't it start?

I'd look for a major fuse, switch, Relay Melted wires or insulation. So the battery drained overnight? Which indicates a bad short somewhere. I like to use the new led bright flashlight to do a through inspection of the wiring system in the dark.

2001 Ford expedition Location AND # of alternator field fuse and alternator mega fuse and any other fuse and relay that has to do with the charging system. Thank you!

Lisa I'M sorry to say their isn't any fuse or fuses that can correct problems with our alterator.Their is what is called a fuseable line witch is basicaly reistance wire that will burn out if over loaded .However you would have nothing even with a new battery NO CRANKING.
The ALT .uses diodes it is AC alternating currant unlike DC direct current..The diodes olny allow the currant to flow in 1 derection and uses a voltage regulator to allow the systems that are DC the battery to charge and at the same time other systems that run on AC voltage to work as well .
Your best bet is to talk it to somebody who you trust and test what you get at the battery with the vehicle running if it reads 14 volts at the top of the battery DC then the ALT IS GOOD , Check the BAT , at this point with the NEGITIVE cable off the BAT. It should read at least 12 volts DC on a 20 volt Dc scale.
But likely it is the alternator

Battery draws down during ride. volt meter reads only 9 volts. all other electric systems seem to be ok except one insterment light seems to be out (tach light) Is this likly to be an alternator output...

when running at bat use good vom 14 + volts .good bat volts non running 12.6 v .if not check wire to reg ..check that reg is grounded GOOD , bat in good shape ..them check for good assending voltage at stator plug. use ac setting on vom. 0-150 v will increase w/ rpms do not leave unplugged to long just to test..smell primary oil should not smell burnt I often replace reg & stator together..

My 2003 Honda Odyssey battery, brake & open doors light is on. I can still start the minivan & drive it around. Do I need a new battery? or is it some other problem?

This seems to be a problem with grounding of those circuits, notice that they are all in the instrument panel and maybe they share a common ground. Are they lit with normal intensity? Does the intensity go up and down if you apply the brake, open or close a door? I doubt that all 3 lights are on for their normal function such as to warn you about battery not being charged, or brake is on. Get a wiring diagram and look into the instrument panel to see how these circuits are grounded though this may be difficult to sort out. You many need assistance from someone with experience.

Ademco 6128 keypad beeping at random times & says bat on the display screen now - is there a battery in there we need to change?

you need to change your main control battiery.
the main control panel takes a 12 volt 7 amphour or a 12 volt 4.5 amphour battery. the larget the amphour the longer the system will last when the power is out. available at fry's radio shack or on line. ps: if the key shows a zone number with the bat, that means you have a wireless sensor low battiery.

Your voltage regulator is not working properly. You may have to convert to a more modern style regulator. Get a voltmeter and measure voltage at the battery with bike off, should be 12 to 12 1/2 volts. Then measure voltage with bike at idle and then at high RPM, should never go over 14 and 1/2 volts. Also bad connections, dirty, rusty, loose etc will cause the gen to work harder and put out high amps. Make sure you have good clean connectors at the battery posts also. GOOD LUCK.

you need to find the volt. reg. and the wires from the reg. go to the alt. the field doesn't get strait bat volt. but 13 or 14 volt isn't bad, but if your wires are rite than your reg. is bad. 18 volt is to high!!!
