After installing Windows 7 on a Thinkpad R40 I lost standby mode. Standby mode was working correctly under Windows XP but doesn't seem to be available under Windows 7. What can I do to get Standby back?

You will need to download the motherboard drivers for you computer from the IBM website. you can get them from here... http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-46024.html

It appears that there is not any drivers available for Windows 7...or even Vista for your computer so they might not work.

I looked up your laptop and found that it has the Mobility Radeon Chipset by ATI. I checked the ATI website and there is not a Windows 7 compatible driver update available. The chipset driver is what will need to be updated so you can have standby mode working. You could try downloading the mobilty radeon driver and see if it will take but i do not think it will work. The computer is older so there will probably not be any Windows 7 support for it.

And also try running Microsoft update if you have not done that yet...it might detect and install a Windows 7 compatible driver. Remember not Windows update but Microsoft update. Windows update will only update windows but microsoft update will update windows, drivers, and programs.

My IBM thinkpad T60 goes into standby mode when restarting. Normally happens when windows XP in about to start. When try to restart it displays preparing to standby. Keeps repeating the same when try to...

Sounds like problems with software. Can you boot to safe mode, enter power option settings and turn off the standby mode to test this?
If this fails, and you can access the Bios, check the hibernation/ power settings in there. i think there is an option to adjust the behaviour on reboot.

Failing that, and if you can find another hard drive, test the laptop using that one. It may be a fault with the hard drive being damaged and preventing booting. Also check the ram by swapping it out.

After that, I'd suggest getting another hard drive or re-installing windows on the old one, you can do an over the top install (saves existing files) if the info on the drive is important. to do this, wait until the installation prompts you to look for an existing installation of windows and repair at that point.

If none of the above, you have a hardware fault, that may be caused by a faulty switch (check the on / off switch is not sticking), or a fault on the motherboard

No, not unless you upgraded the RAM to at least 1GB.

The laptop was unplugged and went into standby mode when the battery ran out. I have recharged the battery but the standby indicator is still on and nothing happens when I try to start it.

can you take out your battery and plug in the power? if it works, i suspected it's a battery faulty. if not please make sure to charge up your battery up to 100% then boot up your machine normally.

Lost wireless - Ibm thinkpad r40

haha worrying isnt it...
after reinstallation of windows no drivers for blutooth , wireless quite often modem and same vga,
windows by default does not install because need specific software ...(drivers)
what you need to do is first of all find out what wifi it is ; like wlan400 e.g.
you then need to download and install the driver for it .as soon as the driver is present windows will detect and install device,
look in device manager for devices with no drivers intalled.
same precedure for each device.

Ibm thinkpad r40 windows xp-pro after formatting and re-installing the system, all updates and SPs downloaded and installed, the wireless "disappeared"! the radio led wouldn't lit, in the connection list...

if drivers installed device is looking for wifi manager which is the software package for wifi.
you can goto control panel open administrative tools select sevices and scroll to wireless zero config and press start.
this will then use windows settings.done

Try pressing the power button next time. That will help you to turn on from an Hibernation.
Alternative you can disable this feature (not recommended for laptops)
  1. Open Control Panel.
    • On the Windows XP default Start menu, click Control Panel.
    • On the Windows XP classic Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, open Power Options.
    • If the computer is in Category View, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click Power Options.
    • If the computer is in Classic View, double-click the Power Options icon.

  3. In the Power Options Properties dialog box, click the Hibernate tab.
  4. On the Hibernate tab, clear the Enable hibernatation check box, click Apply, and then click OK.
