Yes you are correct.. Use some Region Killer software's and then test. it will work...

Make sure hold/lock is not enagaged first.
Reset the player.
If that still fails, go to Philips website
enter your exact model #
download the updated version of the Philips Device Manager
run the Update function on the new Philips Device Manager

You have to use the program called Philips (Arcsoft) Media Converter. I would even get the updated version from Philips website.

Upgrade the firmware or do a Repair in Philips Device Manager

or, just open the Philips Device Manager and click on "Update"

I have the same tv 42TA648BX-37 and it does adjust because not all channels and comercials are widescreen so it adjusts so the picture doesnt look "fat" if you know what I mean. I also recommend checking your software version to se if you need an update.

I just found on the Philips website a file to download and have the DVDR use to update itself to fix that problem and a few others. I've not tried it yet but will be doing so tomorrow. It's worth a shot.
