Since you have not stated which operating system you are using, I suggest that you find the drivers for the mouse, and install them.

Other things you can check:

Device Manager will tell you if the device is seen by the O.S.
Right Click on the 'My Computer' icon, and select properties. In Windows XP, choose the Hardware tab, and click on the 'Device Manager' button. If there is a problem with a piece of hardware, there will be a yellow circle with an exclamation point (!) next to it.

Are you able to connect a wired mouse to the USB port? Any other USB device? If not, a to the BIOS to check if USB is enabled might be in order.
Restart the computer and press the 'Delete' key. You might have to try the 'F2' key or the 'F12' key. Check the 'Advanced' submenu, or the 'Periphials' submenu to see if USB is enabled. Enable any USB options you find. Save you modified BIOS settings, and the computer will reboot. Reattach the wireless mouse, and see if it is discovered.

There would be sync button at the bottom of the mouse. Press and hold that button for 10 seconds while keeping the mouse inline with the receiver. Do let me know if that helps.

How do I get the mouse to mouse the mouse cursor

the battery in the mouse makes the red light come on, not the operating system.
Look in Device manager, find the mouse, uninstall the drivers, scan for new devices, re-install the drivers.
Otherwise look for new drivers on manufacturers site.

I HAVE A NEW NOTEBOOK AND WIRELESS MOUSE.

When you purchase the wireess mouse it should come with a USB device that plugs into a USB port and reads the mouse, all wireless mouses need a USB eye to read the mouse.

Good luck.

My wireless mouse freezes

I had a similar freezing problem with a wireless Logitech mouse and also a problem with the wireless keyboard, sometimes keystrokes would not register and sometimes they'd repeat a dozen times.
I was not able to fix the problem, so I got a Microsoft wireless mouse and keyboard, hoping it was a driver conflict that wouldn't affect both products. Wrong. The exact same thing happened to the Microsoft mouse and keyboard.
The cause of the problem turned out be that I had the receiver plugged into a USB hub along with several other devices. Moving the receiver to one of the USB ports in the back of the PC fixed the problem.
Apparently these wireless desktop devices don't like sharing USB resources with anything else.

MS wireless notebook mouse 3000 not working?

A friend of mine brought me this problem with exactly the same problem. here is what I found. The small notch in usb device socket under the mouse was malfunctioning. If you press this notch you will find the mouse red light blink. If you further try pressing this notch at some point the mouse red light comes on constantly. Thats it, hold it there and try to connect first by pressing the usb device connect switch and then the mouse connect switch. The moment the connection is made the usb device stops blinking and the red light on the mouse starts blinking. Wow, it works now. Some one might just open the mouse and fix this microswtich for a permanent solution.

Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse Not Connecting

After reading on Microsoft about replacing the batteries, down loading drivers and "press the button on the receiver and the connect button the receiver" - I got frustrated and almost gave it flight. Then my wife stepped in and realized that there was a green reset button on the USB connector as well. (who knew?) SO.... you press the green light (which is a button) and release it.... should blink. Then go to THE MOUSE portion and press the connect button for 5 seconds or so.... and wala...... One mouse that plays again! This ones gonna cost me! :) I hope this one works for ya!
