Question about Hayward Navigator Pool Cleaner

1 Answer

Hayward navigator (Gunnite pool) does not move. If I hold by hose, in water, suspended above bottom, the unit does not turn. Hose in good shape , valves in correct position. previous to this it was twisting the hose in only one direction.

You need to install a turbine kit with "a" frames. sounds like your bearings are bad either on the turbine, "a " frames, or both. A set of shoes would be a good idea as well.

Interesting question. Do you have the special Lead Hose, the one with a colored cuff attached to the Navigator itself? Other causes can be, too little or too much hose, a pinhole leak in one of the hoses above water causing the hoses to float, not enough suction on the Navigator. You didn't say if you have the Navigator plugged into a skimmer or in a dedicated suction port in the wall. I would first try increasing the suction to the unit and see if your problem doesn't go away.

Hayward Navigator moves very very slowly. Pool Filter cartrage is clean & I have replaced the shoes, flippers, flaps & impeller bearings. Also tried different hose. Pressue on hose is about 12 to...

Make sure to keep the leaf canister and pump basket clear. Another thing to check is; make sure the screws that hold on the pods(the "flippers" on the sides) are Really tight. Those need to be cranked down pretty hard to ensure that they can move the cleaner along.

We don't know how to vaccuum with the Hayward filter

Find the hose and the vac head and the pole. Assemble. Put the vac head into the water. Find a water return. Put the hose over the water return to fill the hose with water. Find a skimmer, remove the cover and the basket. Insert the hose into the hole (dont let the water out of the hose after you fill it!!!) With the pump on, run the vac over the bottom of the pool until you have cleaned all of the bottom and the sides as far as you can. There should be a brush there also ... with the pole on the brush head. brusl all the pool - sides and bottom.

Other stuff you should know. You should have a Alk level of about 100 ppm, CL level of about 4 or 5 ppm, pH should be around 7.2 / 7.4. Once a week, you should shock the pool ... put in enough CL to bring the level to 20 ppm. You should have about 80 ppm Cyanuric acid. Dry CL comes with Cyanuric acid, liquid does not. If this is a gunnite pool, your CAL level should be around 300 ppm. If you use salt to make CL, your salt level should be 3200 <>. Dont expect the salt generator to meet all your needs. CL you make needs protecting by the cyanuric acid. The more you run the filters, the clearer the water will be. Backwash or clean carts when pressure goes up 10 lbs over fresh clean start pressure.

I hope this helps you. Thanks for your interest in FixYa.com

Navigator Pool Cleaner: When I run my hayward cleaner the hose twists up a...

You have either a bad or stuck gear box or a loose or damaged a frame bearing. The gear box controls turning and the a frame controls propulsion, but one bad bearing will cause the cleaner to move more in one direction, causing the hose to coil. You can hold the cleaner under the water by the top of the hose, and it should turn in all directions within a few minutes. If it doesn't, then it is the gearbox. If it does, then likely a problem with the a frames.

Hayward Navigator sort of floating around by the movement of the water...does not climb walls. Line has suction not sure if its too weak

I consulter the owners manual for this model. This is what they suggest.

First, remove all of the air from the cleaner head and stop all air from entering the pool through the return lines. Also, if the head and hose are covered with bubbles, give the hose a good tug. This will release the air bubbles and allow the pool cleaners to settle son the bottom of the pool. Also, the cleaner head may actually be being lifted off the bottom of the pool by the hose or the pressure in the return lines. Make sure that the hose stays untangled and the pressure from the return lines is not too low (not enought pressure to power) or too high (too much pressure that cause the unit to lift off the floor).

Vacum does't move,

If the unit is pulling water and the flippers are moving, try hold ing the flippers and see if you can keep them from moving. This is probally what you will find. It will mean that your "A" frame is worn, or the bearings on the rockers, or the cams on the paddle wheel are worn. All of witch can be looked at at your local pool store and usually they will only charge for the part's used. Good luck and write back if this doesn't fix it and we can go from there

Does not move

Typically when this happens there are many reasons from not enough suction on the hose do to a improperly adjusted valve or a dirty filter. Navigators will also not move if debris is stuc insde the unit take off screw in the bottom center of the machine wiggle it back and forth and upside down or hold the wings and shake it you may hear somthing inside it wedging up the moving parts get it out if thats not the problem its time for a rebuild kit

Hayward Navigator gets stuck at wall

I have had the same Navigator for many, many years. I have replaced it's guts, pods, feet and gears whenever things wear out. I have a vinyl pool and it works great. I had a problem with it charging into the wall and just sit there beating it's feet ..... now this was my solution, and I'm surprised that Navigator has not altered the design to deal with getting stuck against a wall. This will sound CRAZY but it works great!! Take a plastic lid for a 5 gallon bucket and cut out a round-nose for the front of your navigator. The curved shape is prefect and you can notch the plastic lid and it will snug right into the Navigator body. This gives your Navigator a round-nose and it will never get stuck against a wall again.

Hayward Navigator Pool Cleaner Will Not Move

The problem is that you have too much play in your drivetrain. You will need to check for movement between the pod and the a-arm and then between the a-arm and turbine. It would also be a good idea to check the turbine bearings. Find the loose fitting, worn part and that is your problem. As far as it not twisting on the end of the hose; this is most likely caused by the screen on the back of the unit being obstructed by debris or the gearbox assembly being jammed by debris that got through the screen or is just worn out. If you have any mechanical abilty you shoud be able to do these repairs yourself with the help of a downloadabe exploded diagram. If not call a pool repairman the parts are not really that expensive compared to the cost of a new unit.
