Suggested Laptop Wireless Adapter For HIGH SPEED INTERNET

Hi, just got set up with ATT 6Mb DSL internet service and that included a 2Wire Wireless Gateway router. Using it now with ethernet cable to lhook to laptop and that's working great. Have another laptop in the house, and one other desktop and would rather have the laptops operate as wireless.
Would love to know what wireless adapter that you would suggest that consider buying, and/or specs for what I need. Some friends have suggested a USB version, but the reviews online are all over the board on technology and the prices are equally all over the board. I've heard you can get a decent device for $20-30, but don't know what I should do or spend. And does the wireless adapter interfere with the DSL speed? And can the cable be used for the desktop and wireless for the two laptops simultaneously? Thanks, Charlie.

I agree with the above.  I would go with a pcmcia card and not a usb adaptor.  usb adaptors are not reliable and you will notice a speed decrease with a usb adaptor.  Plus a usb adaptor sticks out more that a pcmcia card which means it can be damaged easier.  WIth the home portal you can have multiple devices running at the same with with very little, if any decrease in speed.

Best,
Bob

I would go with card slot adapters, you can find many different ones but I used Dynex 802.11G card even running Win98, I've seen then cheap on sites like eBay. You can use acble and wireless at the same time and with 6MP, you will not notice any speed loss unless you are running live feeds on all 3 computer

ATT is your high speed internet provider and they supply you with 2wire DSL modem which has alot of power supply adapter going bad (you can Google 2wire AC dapter problem).
You can buy your own DSL modem but the key is the setting it up, it depends on how your ATT DSL system is setup, DHCP, PPOe, etc. What ever you do I hope you do have the user name and password that you may need to setup the new modem.
To explain exactly how here will take many many words and pages to explain, and without knowing your exact setup, it will be real difficult.
ATT does not care if you use your own DSL modem but they will not help you setting it up.
I would suggest you to get someone at school that knows a lot about computer, may be aks your school IT person to see if he/she can help you for free pizza.
I hope my explanation will help you out.

Are you using AT&T as a provider? I've had a lot of dealing with their DSL Internet. DSL is not a solid signal for Them. SO they came out with Fiber Optics now that doesn't lose signal If you have a different provider run a speed test online to see if you are getting the speed that you are paying for.

A friend gave me old 2Wire 1701HG wireless modem/router. It didn't come with power cord, cables etc. I found a 4.5V cord from old walkman that worked. Anyway, have ATT DSL service with speedstream 4100...

That would seem to be AT&T's favorite house brand...
Me thinks the SpeedStream was their SLOWEST
"DSL"

"2wire" was their next iteration of SLOW "DSL"

Yes... You will need to contact THEM ... or whom-so-ever is your INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER (ISP)...

As I recall... the PRICE DIFFERENCE from one
service to the other was about $10 per month.

Give them your pirated modem number and they
will need to register it as a digital subscriber
in order for you to gain internet access.

CAN A 2WIRE DSL ROUTER WORK WITH A CABLE INTERNET CONEECTION

The 2wire dsl modem/router cannot be use with a another cable modem , since this 2wire device is also a modem/router and its made for the DSL conenction that's why it wont work with Cox cable, the best thing that you can do is to ask Cox to give a wireless modem/router like this 2wire so you can still use the wireless connection of your computer..

Hope that helps..........
