Toro 265-6 model 72045 PTO clutch will not engage. PTO checked with 12V and works okay. Both relays checked and working okay. All fuses are good. Not sure how to check PTO switch. Any other suggestions on how to diagnose problem will be appreciated.

Ohm out the clutch......should be 2-4 ohms any less means the clutch has an internal short and will need to be replaced. also check the saftey interlock module, however the modle numbers u gave do not come up, relays checked ok? how did u test them?

  • Anonymous Apr 16, 2012

Thanks for the "2-4 ohms" information. I have power down at the end of the plug so now I can test the clutch to make sure before I buy one.

Why do i not get power to the pto of my john deere lx280?

Check the resistance of the PTO clutch winding with the PTO power cable disconnected. It should read 2 - 4 ohms.

The engine does not need to be running for PTO to engage but all safeties must be operational.

I believe the red led ON indicates the PTO clutch relay is (should be) energized. So if the red led is off then the PTO relay is not energized hence no power to the clutch. Check all fuses. You need to test your way back from the PTO switch to the PTO relay, through the safeties.

Husqvarne ez 4217 The PTO will not engage clutch to engage cutting blades Does this have relay or fuse

There is a fuse specific to the electric clutch along with switches and multiple relays that effect the operator safety interlocks.

7. Fuses
The fuses are located in a holder at the right hand side of the battery compartment. They are flat pin fuses of the same type used in automobiles. There are two fuses.
Fuse ratings and functions:
• 20 A, Primary fuse.
• 7.5 A, Mower deck coupling.

If the fuse is good, check voltage at the clutch connector when engine off/key in run position, seat occupied and PTO on. If 12V and clutch not energized, bad clutch. Otherwise seat switch, pto switch, key switch, cabling, and relays. See schematic in manual.

Pto switch will not stay engaged on my john deere 265 model lawn tractor

Poor connection, bad switch or faulty clutch coil. Check for constant power to clutch wth test light, if light goes out at same time check wires to switch for corrosion. If you can find the 12v supply to the switch check it the same way. If it has constant power to clutch check for good ground, if that is OK replace clutch. If power stops when clutch does replace switch or in switch. There are prob some safety switches at seat and possible on reverse these can cause switch to shut off clutch also. Check these for good connections. If possible check these with continuity tester when all wires are removed while exercisin switch.

I have a Toro LX 500 Lawn tractor the pto clutch will not engage, I have 13 volt at the plug for the clutch , so ordered and installed new clutch... Still will not engage checked volts again had 9.3

PTO Clutch will not stay engaged.
There is a very fine one page discussion on evaluating electric clutches at this site:

http://www.messicks.com/Articles/FixingElectricClutch.aspx

My JD tech manual, which covers the entire LA 100 series, agrees with the electrical specifications. It states that the Electric PTO Clutch should show the following:
  • Resistance 3.7 ohms
  • Current Draw 3.25 amps.
It does not give the air gap. It does include a note to check the PTO Clutch Key for damage or if missing. So there is a drive key between the PTO Clutch and the shaft. Additionally, it recommends checking the tightness of the cap screw. That's the screw or bolt that holds the clutch on the shaft.
  • Cap Screw torque 55 lb-ft (75 N.m).

John Deere 265 replaced pto switch on dash pto drive belt and mower deck belt still pto does not engage...also randomly blows 20 amp fuse from time to time when pto would engage previously...checked...

The electrical is part of the PTO clutch assembly. It should only draw 5-7 amps. Ohm reading is somewhere between 1.7 to 2.5 ohms.

These coils do short from anywhere from a partial short to completely.

New pto clutch willnot engage gets hot

First off I would check for power and ground at the connector. Not knowing what kind of unit you have I have to go with the most common, or what I see the most of.. The PTO switches are bad to short out on some models and can cause all kinds of issues. I hope this is not a case of replacing the clutch when the switch was the problem.. Good luck..

When we engage the pto switch, on our Ford YT16 42" cut, the mower deck does not operate. Is this a pto switch issue, clutch issue, or something else? How do we fix it?

Could be the switch. This model may also have a relay I'm not sure because of the age. There is also a seat switch that has to be made for the PTO to work. I f you have a 12V tester, with tractor off, disconnect wire from the PTO. Start motor, have an assistant sit on seat and turn on PTO test wire for voltage. If none present, then trace wire back, to either the switch or relay. There also should be a fuse in the circuit. By the way these were cool tractors.
