This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

See the following for how to tilt the console back.

Washer will not drain or spin

The two things that cause this are the lid switch and the pressure switch. If the lid switch does not make it thinks the lid is open and it will not spin for safety reasons. If the pressure switch or line from the tub to the switch located inside the control panel, is either plugged or not working it does not know there is water in the machine to spin or drain. You can take the tube off the switch and blow through it to clear it and see if that is the issue but I would concentrate on the lid switch first. Sometimes these get bent and you can test them using a small screwdriver or pen to press on the switch to see if it clicks and starts spinning. These are also cheap and easy to replace. You also have the possiblity that your control board is out but we won't go there yet till you test the lid switch and the pressure switch.

Machine won't spin out the water in the clothes, has to be wrung by hand..What would you think the part is that's holding this up?

Check the washer lid safety switch . Sounds like it is a simple switch for when you close the lid it allows to spin only when lid is closed. It is a safety switch for spinning to not operated if lid is open durring spinning cycle. It's maybe a 20 dollar part and easy install.

My washer will work on everything except the spin will not drain the water out. Please help....don't know what to do

Replace the defective lid switch,it is under the control console. their are screws in the back of each end cap securing the control panel to the top. Also make sure the screws holding the left side hinge to the lid are tight because they also move the arm that activates the lid switch. very easy repair Good Luck

Load does not complete with spin cycle

If you aren't getting an E20 code (drainage problem), you probably have a bad door switch. The switch is behind where the door catch (striker) catches and holds the door closed during the cycle. When the switch goes bad, and it does often with your model, it "fools" the machine into thinking that the door is not properly closed and will not allow it to go into spin. To replace, take the two screws off the back of the top lid and slide off. Open the front door and remove the two screws holding the door switch (where the catch goes into). Reach down into the front of the machine and bring the door switch to the top. Note how the wiring connects and reconnect exactly the same to the new switch. Replace the switch and lid and you are ready to wash! Easy fix, but the part is about $100 :( ... Good luck!!! PS: Be sure to disconnect power before repair!!!

Drum won't spin. Do you think it's a broken belt? The water DOES go out. Thanks, Nancy

hmmm... washing machines usually do not have belts. they have very expensive transmissions...

could be as easy as the lid switch thinking the top lid is open. they have an interlock so it will not spin with the lid open. The switches are on the inside so you have to take the top off to access it.

Washer will not move on from wash cycle to spin cycle...water will not pump it the water pump or the timer

On this one I am thinking it is one of 2 problems....either it is the lid switch or the motor coupling. you can confirm by testing the lid switch with a multimeter. when the lid is open you should not have any condinuity, when closed you should have condinuity. if you are electrically minded an easy way to confirm the lid swith is bypassing it with a wire nut and checking to see if it goes into spin. If it does make sure you replace the lid's there for a reason!!

Kenmore kill switch

it's under the top panel, you must remove the two screws on the control panel (one on each side in the front lower corner of control panel), then roll the entire panel up and over the top on it's hinges. then there are two gold clips (one on each side) that loosen the back from the entire cabinet, stick a flat blade screwdriver in them and they will pop out. theres one plug with three wires in it going to the top re,ove it, then open the lid and grab the top panel and tilt to you about 30 degrees up and slide the whole cabinet away from the base and guts of the machine.
now you can access the lid switch to replace it.
