Trouble faxing and receiving fax from "Brother 575"
Can you help me with my fax machine? I have vonage, and a second line # with the wire in the second plug, and I still can't receive any faxes. The machine makes copies, and receives calls, but not faxes. What can I do? e-mail address: email@example.com

Yes, the Brother Fax-575 does have answering machine capabilities, in fact it recommends using an answering machine on a shared line. To download your User Guide, click on the link below. Best of luck and thank you for using Fixya! Greg Brother Fax-575 User Guide
This is a strange problem you have here my friend. I found the manual if you need it. it is located here: http://www.brother-usa.com/Data/Documentation/Fax/User/UM_FAX575.pdf
If you cannot sort it out with the manual, I suggest that you contact Brother USA and see if they can assist you. their telephone number should be on page 1 I think
The machine told you poor line quality. Try a different phone line to verify. Try it at a friends house to verify it. If you are using Vonage, that is the problem. I have Vonage and every fax I test with has some issues with poor line.
Try changing the "Bandwidth Saver" settings on your Vonage account from the Vonage website. Perform the following:
1. Login to your Vonage account online and click the "Features" tab.
2. Scroll down to the "Bandwidth Saver" link and click on the "Configure" button.
3. You will see a scrollbar with 3 settings: 30kbps, 50kbps and 90kbps
NOTE: My "Saver" was set to 90kbps (Highest Sound Quality) by default.
4. Click on 30kbps (Normal) and click "Submit".
5. Wait about an hour before testing as it could take that long for the change to take effect.
6. Send a test fax to the HP fax test service at 1-888-hpfaxme (1-888-473-2963).
NOTE: This is a GREAT service provided by HP. If your fax goes through correctly, you will receive a return fax within five minutes.
We upgraded to Verizon FiOS and never thought the increased upload speed (4mbps) would present an issue sending faxes. WRONG. We never had fax issues with DSL, Comcast or even Broadstripe VOIP service but for some reason Vonage + FiOS = no fax. That is until we set our Vonage VOIP sound quality to "Normal". Our phone voice quality has been much more reliable since throttling back. This sentiment has also been shared by other Vonage users who have experienced echoing and noise when utilizing the higher quality settings.
Your phone coversations may not have FM quality sound but they will have AM quality and usually that is just fine.
Have you called your own fax line and just listened to the fax hand shake? might sound simple but I have called fax lines before and it just rang, or it was busy or static, if your not getting a clear fax hand shake, then it is the phone line, if there is no answer you may have turned your fax to manual receive mode, If you don't know how it should sound call a friends business fax line and listen to it. I have actually gone out to businesses that reported send or receive problems just to call the line and listen to a disconnect message, that would make it difficult to fax.
