This error is cause by 3rd party ink, installing peaces of ink sticks instead of whole ink sticks or installing wrong ink sticks. Another thing that can cause this error is a sensor on the inkloader, which can brake or is not connected properly. So what you can do is take of the inkloader then make sure there is no ink peaces in the inkloader shaft. With a small thin flathead screw driver you can brake peace of ink that are stuck inside the inkloader carefully without damaging the inkloader of course. Then put it back in it's place and make sure all connections are good and no wires are ripped. If they are ripped you have to buy a new inkloader. Install only new OEM ink sticks and good luck. Below I have written the website and the illustration number so you can search the manuel on how to remove the top inkloader.

My Xerox 8550 says 'ink sticks are jammed'. Yet,

This could be a print head problem. If the print head is calling for ink and the sensor is bad the ink melter will continue to melt ink and over flow the print head. In which case the print head need to be replaced.
Also it could be a problem with the ink melter. If it isn't melting the ink it will cause this error.
To get to the ones at the end of the chute I stick a long screwdriver and break it free from the melter.

Error code 09038.46:72241

That code is a back stick count failure.
You want to look in your ink loader, see if there is a stick jammed, twisted, broken or in anyother way out of place or hung up in the slot.
Be sure you loaded a 8550 stick also, since the shapes on the different phaser printer sticks are all different.
You may have to carefully remove the black sticks and reload them. You can take a screw and screw it into the ink stick, slide it back and remove.
Most likely you will find a gap in the ink sticks causing the problem. Here are the Xerox support page instructions.

  1. Open and close the Top Cover to resolve the problem.
  2. If the problem persists, arrange the ink sticks until there are no spaces between sticks of the same color.
  3. Check for non 8500/8550 ink sticks jammed in the ink load chutes. If non 8500/8550 ink sticks, whether manufactured by Xerox or by a non-Xerox ink vendor, caused the ink sick jam, contact support to place a service call.

Ink not being removed from metal drum, causing jam

Normally indicates that the mintenance kit is drying out and not properly lubricating the drum.
Or non xerox ink sticks have been known to cause that.

ERROR PROBLEM

Do not use the ink sticks if they have a hairline crack in them. They eventually crack and jam the printer. So far I've only noticed this with the black ink sticks. 5a7294b.jpg

The black ink sticks are jammed.
Open the ink loader and ensure that the black ink sticks are able to slide in the ink loading chute. Remove any broken of partial ink sticks.
One of your black sticks is not advancing properly.
Make sure one isnt cracked or twisted. If you happened to have put in a stick for a different phaser model, it may not be the same shape and would not hut the actuator at the bottom of the ink loader.
Raise your cover where you add your ink sticks and look at the black sticks. One is stuck somehow.
If you need to remove them, take a screw, a drywall type screw is best, and twist it into the ink block and slide it up and out, then reload the ink loader with good sticks. That shoulf do it. I ihave never witnessed the ink loader itself be the problem.
