Question about Palm Z22 Handheld

2 Answers

My Palm Z22 does not respond to stylus taps. I have tried a soft reset and that does not help. I am not able to do a hard reset because I need to tap the Palm with my stylus at some point to tell it to go ahead and the Palm doesn't sense the sylus tap I'm making. I bought this in 2007. Has it outlived its useful life already?

I'd already seen the respone you just e-mailed me. The problem (as i said before) is that the first step - a soft reset - does nothing and I'm not able to do the next step - a hard reset - because at some point in doing that I still need to be able to use the stylus to tell the Palm to go ahead and do a hard reset, and the Palm doesn't read what I try to send it.

I've since seen another FixYa response that indicates that Palm is aware of a problem of dust collecting in the PDA's so that it is impossible to get a tap on the screen to register. That response suggested using a business card to stick into the corners between the frame and the screen in an effort to remove dust. I've tried that also without success. This second response also indicates that any other solution requires opening up the Palm, which I'm not about to try myself.

Hello. Take your palm back to the store and have a technician reset it for you. Ask there where you stand with useful life, contracts and such. Regards, Joe

My handheld is not responding.
On rare occasions your handheld may not respond when you press a button or tap the screen.
If this happens, first check that Keylock is not turned on.
If Keylock is off and your handheld is still not responding, you need to reset your handheld. A soft
reset tells your handheld to stop and start over again. This does not affect any of the information
or applications on your handheld.
If your handheld does not respond after a soft reset, you need to perform a hard reset.
If your handheld still does not respond after a reset, check your third-party applications for
incompatible applications.
I don’t see anything on my handheld’s screen.
• Press an application button to ensure that your handheld is turned on.
• If your handheld was exposed to cold, make sure it is at room temperature.
• Charge your handheld.
Perform a soft reset. If your handheld still doesn’t turn on, perform a hard reset.
My handheld doesn’t respond to taps correctly.
If your handheld is not responding to taps correctly, you need to align the screen.
When I tap Menu in the input area, nothing happens.
• Tap the upper-left corner of the screen to try to open the menus.
Align the screen and try tapping Menu again.
• If nothing happens, you may be in an application or screen that does not use menus. Switch to
a different application and try tapping Menu. If it works in the second application, then the first
does not use menus.
• If tapping Menu does not work in the second application, try aligning the screen.
check out on page number 320 and 321 for service centers technical support.
This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya.

I have a palm z22 Pda the tochksrceen is no working

There are several answers listed in Fixya under Z22 and touchpad or touch screen. You can start by trying to clean under the edges of the face frame with a credit card or something similar. If that doesn't work, try a soft reset by pushing the reset button on the back of the device. If that doesn't work, you can do a hard reset, but it loses all the data in the device. If you have it stored on your desktop calendar, this might solve the problem. To do a hard reset, check this site for instructions. http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/common/article/42094_en.html

If those steps don't work, you may need to replace the digitizer. You can pay someone to do it, or you can buy the part on ebay for about $12. Get one that comes with the tools you will need. Unfortunately, they don't come with instructions. I have posted the instructions in several places on Fixya. If you can't find them, write again. Hopefully the easier steps will do the trick.

How do I reset my palm z22 to factory settings?

If you've set a password on your handheld, any hard reset will automatically become a Factory Reset. With this method, you'll enter a password and then perform a hard reset.

  1. On your handheld, launch the Prefs application. Under General, select Security.
  2. If the Password box says "Unassigned," tap the box and create a password for your handheld.
  3. Once the password has been set, remove the stylus. Disconnect your handheld from the AC charger, if connected.
  4. On your handheld, hold down the Power button.
  5. While holding down the Power button, use the stylus to press the RESET button on the back of your handheld.
  6. While still holding Power button, the screen will show the Palm logo and a progress bar. Then the circular Palm Powered logo will appear. Release the power button when you see the Palm Powered logo.
887_palmlogo_progressbar.gif spacer.gif 887_poweredcircle.gif Keep holding the Power button during this screen. spacer.gif When you see this screen, you can release the Power button.
  7. A message will appear warning that you are about to erase all the data stored on your smartphone. Press UP.
  8. You'll see a series of Palm logo screens, then a prompt to tap onscreen targets. The Factory Reset is complete.

Z22 palm handheld touchscreen won't respond - i've done soft reset -- several times -- used the 5 way to bring up the touchscreen -- tapped and nothing happened.

Hi, Try doing a hard reset to see if this will correct the problem.

Hold down the power button and at the same time use the tip of your stylus or any other non sharp item and press the inside the reset hole on the back of your palm.
When you see the Palm power logo appear you can let go of the power button and also the one on the back of you unit.
It will display a message asking if you want to do a hard reset and that it will erase all your data. select yes by hitting the up part of your 5 way button on the bottom of your unit. This is the one you use to navigate around your palm screen. After it resets you wil then be prompted to reset the screen by tapping the targets. If it works great. If not then you have something wrong that needs to be looked at. Before you send it in go to:
www.palm.com.
Select pda and then your model. From there go to the support screen and do a live chat. This is free and they may be able to live you some help. Best wishes.

Can't reset my password on my Palm Z22

Hi,
If you have forgotten your password you should be able to use the password hint to figure out what it is. You can try a soft reset to see if that will clear the password but I am pretty sure this won't help. To do a soft reset use the tip of the stylus or something pointed like a paper clip and inset it in the hole on the back of your palm pilot. This will make the unit reset it's self. If this doesn't help then you must preform a Hard rest to continuing using your hand held. You need to make sure that you have all your information backed up on your computer as a hard reset will erase everything on your hand held. Here are the steps to do a hard reset:

1. Press and hold the power button.

2. While holding the power button, use the tip of the stylus ( or a similar object without a sharp tip) to gently press and release the reset button inside the hole on the back of your handheld.

3. Wait for the Palm Powered logo to appear, and then release the power button.

4. When you see the message that warns you about erasing all of the info on your handheld do one of the following:
a) Press UP on the 5 way navigator button on the bottom of your handheld to finish the reset and show the touch screen.
b) Press any other button to do a soft reset.

5. When prompted , tap to align the screen, and then set the language you want to use on your handheld. A screen appears showing the Palm logo and a progress bar. From there continue to set up your Palm and then do a hot sync. You should be able to reset a password if you want one. Best wishes....Hope this helps.

Touch screen on Palm Z22 does not respond

The Data on your Z22 is rock-solid safe, but unlike the answer that states to do a RESET- DO NOT ! The touch screen problem has nothing to do with resetting, it is a failure of the soft plastic top layer of the touch screen. There is a tiny, remote possibility that the logic circuits are out of sync and the touchscreen really is mixed up in a software state, and a SOFT RESET may reset the touch screen, but this is almost unheard of ( but does happen).
I have an entire page on the Z22 and how to maintain, repair and interface it. It is at:
kidbots.com/WEBADD/Z22_PALM_PILOT/Z22_PALM_PILOT.html

I would suggest trying a few tricks listed on my web page, and see if you can get the screen to work again. It is IMPERATIVE to get a hard plastic cover over the screen to keep it working!

Please read over the information on the Z22 page.

good luck

Broken screen

The problem could be the touchscreen but, typically, with the Z22 it's more of a configuration problem. I would recommend doing a "hard reset" after syncronizing. To reset the unit to factory specs hold in the reset (in the back) and the power button simultaneously for, at least, five seconds. Instead of the Palm icon you'll see a prompt to push up on the touchpad to reset to factory defaults. Then, go through the entire setup process, including the Digitizer to initialize and calibrate the touchpad. Hopefully, that should restore the touchpad. Otherwise, well, replacing that thing yourself is NOT easy.

You can find replacements easily on eBay.
