Question about GE JE2160 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

The paint (or whatever it is covering the bottom)

We bought this GE Microwave in April 2007, had to replace a tube in July 2008, and now the turntable has made a track on the bottom of the unit, and the paint can be lifted off in a sheet. What can be done about about this? It seems that we bought a clunker. We had our other GE Microwave unit for 20 years with no problems.

That's a good answer, but I think the bottom of the microwave is beyond repair. It is showing the metal underneath. What above the metal? Paint, or some other substance?

Check the 3 wheels on the circular plastic part that's fitted below the turntable.
It sounds like they may need some filing down. Run your fingers around the wheels to see if there are any sharp bits of plastic that could be cutting into the paintwork on the base.

Clean out the base of your oven and apply a thin film of vaseline to each of the 3 wheels. This will help rotation in future.
Remember to keep cleaning out any excess food particles that may lodge below the turntable, as these will eventually slow down or stop the rotation, which in turn means that your food is not heated evenly throughout!!!

GE Profile Spacemaker XL1800 microwave turntable

The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray.

You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

If yours is not set to be off via the control panel, and it won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

To replace either, you need to unplug power, then remove the bottom cover of the oven.

On some, you have to cut the motor cover off with snips, then use a screw when reassembling it.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

Paint inside microwave is chipped and blistered. How do you fix it?

HI,
If you are able to spent money for a new Microwave then go for a new one.
If you are interested to repair and reuse the existing Microwave then keep on thing in mind, if you paint it then also it will not lasts for a long time as the metal underneath is rusted.

Mircowave runs but doesn't heat and it has a load hum.

You may need a new microwave..however, the diode may be defective or the magnatron tube may need replacing,,The magnatron tube is only warranted for 5 years so it may be used up as the model is (10years)fairly old.

Not heating

most likly it is the mag and the diode. it should be covered for ten years after you bought the unit so check into that. you will have to pay a ge authorize servicer to replace it though but parts should be covered and still cheaper than a new microwave

Paint in the GE micro oven is flaking off.

no problems,,, just paint it,, so long as you use normal paints without any metal in them any enamel paint will do,, but it will work fine as it is,, it realy dont need any paint on it,, its only there to make it look nice,,however if you do paint it you must let it dry out fully before you use it again or you may find it go's with a big "bang!" when the paint catches fire!!!!!!!!!

It sounds like you are talking about the turntable tray adapter in the bottom.
What usually causes arcing is the reaction of the RF (microwave) energy acting on carbon. It's great that the motor and orifice are OK. Sounds like you just need to replace the T/T adapter. If the paint is pitted or altered, you need to use a special catalytic paint for microwave cavities to touch it up. The paint's main purpose is to protect the metal from rust but it is a high temperature paint to stand up to the higher temperature of that environment.

I had the exact same problem. There are two switches on the door. One is a safety lockout switch for the magnatron. The switch just wears out.
