When i turn my camera on the lens goes in and out and when its done it says 'turn camera off and on again' what is wrong with my camera

the message "turn the power off and on again" actually indicates that there is a mulfunction w/lens. you can try initializing the camera.make sure your using a fully charged batt. (home>settings>main settings>main settings1>initialize).if it still doesnt work, try power reset procedure (turn power off, remove batt, and leave cam w/o power for more than a min.) if still issue persist your camera might require repair or you can go this unconventional route:

...so banging the camera may actually work some times.but be careful doing this might cause injury or hardware damage...but what have you got to loose anyway. hope this works for you.tnx:)

My lens focuses only intermittenly

If you have the settings on AUTO the camera will automatically adjust to what it thinks will make the best picture.
Try and use the SCN.
You can also switch the flash on and off as you wish.

you camera goes in a stand by mode you need to use a memory card nothing is wrong with the camera. So I would suggest you must use a memory card reader for this purpose.

AV Out Keeps Turning Off

Okay well you have to eject the tape and leave the eject open. There is an auto timer that always turns off the picture. If you open up the tape eject and leave it open the camera will always stay on.

Sony DSC-S500

you are right it has defective mechanism,  a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. You need professional service to fix it.
