The on button on my Toshiba laptop is beginning to not work (I'm lucky to be able to get it to turn on.) Can a repair tech replace that button so I don't have to worry that I won't be able to start my computer? Diana

If your laptop has soft touch buttons somewhere else on the computer or the screen they sometimes turn on the computer as well. If it's actually the button that's broken, which any repair shop will replace for you , I work for Computer Repair NYC andwe do this repair frequently.

If your laptop is out of warranty, you should look for a repair service that will charge you only for the replacement of the button (which involves quite a lot of work, to be honest, so it won't be extremely cheap), and not a repair shop that will tell you that they don't care which part is actually broken, and just replace the whole motherboard, which will cost you half the price of the laptop.
If the computer is still under warranty, then you are good, because it's not your problem if the service will replace the button or the whole board inside :)
Good luck :)

Toshiba laptop a210-15k wont turn on .power lights and battery lights on .when i pres the button of power it begins to stars and I hear the noise of the fan moving for 10 sek and then the fan slows down...

1. Take the battery out of the laptop & try to turn on the laptop using power adapter only. If the computer turns on, then the battery is defective & needs to be replaced.
2. Make sure the power adapter is not defective. Test the output voltage of the power adapter using a voltmeter. Compare the voltmeter reading to the nominal value written on the adapter or the laptop.
3. If you have another processor which is compatible with your laptop's model, try swapping processors & test to see if the laptop will work.
4. The motherboard could be defective & needs to be replaced.

Last night my Toshiba's screen turned white with a few red and yellow stripped lines. Than the white filled in with black over night. Now the screen is blank, the power button won't turn it off only on....

HI There,

I'm a pro laptop repair/rebuild tech. If you own an external regular computer monitor or even a friend who does, connect the laptop to the external monitor and power it on. Your Toshiba will have an F key with a little icon figure of a monitor on it. Hold down the fn key and press that F key to transfer the laptop display signal to the external monitor.

If the external monitor shows your normal laptop screen as it would usually display, you have a bad laptop LCD and some other (as yet) undetermined problem. If the external monitor is black just like the laptop, then yout video/graphics card has failed and since it's closely associated with power up issues at the beginning of the startup cycle, is interfering with the laptop's ability to run the operating system because it never gets that far.

From what you've described, you're going to have a choice of sending the laptop to a motherboard repair service (if you go to eBay and type "Motherboard Repair Laptop" in the search window you'll see many choices) for a price between $100 and $200 or need to start shopping for new laptop.

Remember, "don't shoot the messenger"!

Good Luck

The hinges on my Toshiba Satellite A85 Laptop are broken....Can they be repaired?

The hinges can't be repaired, but can be replaced. It's feasible to do it yourself if you're tech savy. Just look online for guides that show you how to replace the hinge on any toshiba laptop and you should get an idea how to do the replacement step by step for this specific model. I work for Computer Repair NYC and i have to fix this problem a lot, you can get the hinge on ebay.

Most likely the lamp is dying. Try replacing the lamp before calling a repair tech. What does the Owners manual say about the blink lights?

Display has lines on it

Well I hate to say it but there is a problem with either the motherboard/video card or the screen itself. Neither of which you can repair yourself.
If it's still under warranty id contact Toshiba (Google there website)
and find out how to send it to them and ask anything else you wanna know and let them repair.

If its not under warranty you can either buy a new laptop, or find the parts if your lucky on Ebay, and repair it yourself but you don't know if its the motherboard/video card or Screen (Hard to find out which without a service tech looking at it). Plus Laptops aren't as easy to work on even with instructions.

Laptop won't start.

Those are items I would have done myself to test it. It sounds like some item is bad on MOBO (motherboard) it will have to be replaced in any case. I would order a new battery and a replacement MOBO for that unit. If your under a warranty Toshiba would have you send back the laptop to them so they can repair it. Or have local authorized service center send a tech with replacement parts to fix it onsite.
