On/off switch doesn't work. No power. The last few times I used it, kept cutting out but now won't switch on at all. No blockages.

As it was cutting out before it stopped working all to gether, it most likely isnt the switch but the motor.

The motor has a built in over-current trip to protect itself (and you if it seriously overheated and caught fire). This normally automatically resets itself, however if the motor has just about had it, the moment it is switched on, it just trips again. Eventually, the motor wont do anything.

The primary cause of motors overheating is that the filters are not cleaned or replaced frequently enough. Dont be fooled by Dyson's "lifetime filters". They need to be regularly cleaned and replaced when necessary.

Replacement motors are avaible on eBay for about £25, however repalcing one requires good DIY skills and tools.

Have a look at www.dysonmedic.com and see if you feel you can tackle it yourself. If not, take it to a repair shop or call the Dyson helpline.

Dyson dc04

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

Like most Dyson vacuums, DC04 is equipped with a thermal cutout, which will shut the vacuum off for protection if it starts to overheat. This could be due to a blockage - the pre-filter may also need a wash. It should automatically reset after it's had at least 2 hours to cool down. You can prevent this from reoccurring following the steps below.

To wash the pre-filter, use cold water without detergent, as shown in the video below. Allow at least 12 hours for both parts of the filter to dry completely before replacing it.

To check the vacuum for blockages, just follow the steps shown in our online Support guide: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc04/dc04-standard/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-won-t-switch-on-or-cuts-out/machine-won-t-switch-on-or-cuts-out/my-machine-cut-out-whilst-i-was-using-it/how-to-wash-filters/machine-not-sucking-picking-up-as-well-as-usual-dc04/wand-suction

If you'd like further advice after giving these checks a try, please give our experts a call directly on 0800 298 0298. We're available from 8am-8pm from Monday to Friday, and 8am-6pm on weekends. Calls are free from UK landlines.

Sweeper stopped after using wand

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.
Most of our vacuums include a thermal cut out, which shuts the machine off if it starts to overheat. Usually this will be because the filter needs a wash, or because there's a blockage in the machine. From what you've described it sounds like there's a blockage in the hose, wand or duct.
To resolve this, please follow the steps shown in our online Support guide: http://content.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=954&product=DC17-ANIMAL
It's important to wash your machine's filter at least once every 3-6 months, as shown in the video above. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for it to dry completely before replacing it.
This should resolve the issue, but if you would like some further advice from our experts, please email us at askdysonUS@dyson.com. We'll be in touch as soon as possible.
Best wishes,
Jack

Hi, I have the Hoover d14194 bagless pet vacuum..when I switched it on it worked but kept cutting out, I emptied it and cleaned the filters but now it won't even switch on.is there something I can

You could check the motor brushes, if they are worn and check for loose wire connections.
Another possibility is that there may be a break in the lead, plug it in and shake the lead, if it starts and stops you have probably found your problem with a broken lead.

How to fix blockage on DC24

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty with your DC24. From your description of the issue, it sounds as if your machine is shutting off because it's overheating. This may be due to a blockage, and the filters may also need a wash.

To locate and remove any blockages, please follow the steps shown in our online Support guide:

http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc24/dc24-multi-floor/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-won-t-switch-on-or-cuts-out/my-machine-cut-out-whilst-i-was-using-it/how-to-remove-a-blockage/check-wand-and-hose-step-1

In normal use, the filters should be washed at least once a month, as shown in the video below. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for the filters to dry completely somewhere warm before replacing them.

This should resolve the issue, but if you'd like any further assistance or advice, please call us on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US).

Best wishes,

I have the Dyson DC23 with a Motorhead. Recently the motorhead has been cutting out but now doesn't work at all. We have checked for blockages and anything that may be tangled in it. It all looks...

My Dyson DC21 powerhead shuts off on its own. There is no blockage, I have reset the brushbar several times and cleaned the filters. I am frustrated! I want this problem fixed, I have had my vacuum well over 5 years :(

Is it possible to overheat the motor?

This can happen , normally if the filters are kept clean and replaced now and again the motor should last quite a few years if it does overheat then it has a thermal cut off that resets after it cools down ,,Hope this is of some help

No power to Dyson checked plug & fuse both ok any Ideas

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

If the machine cut out during use this will be the thermal cut out. This is caused by the motor becoming too hot during use, due to a blockage or a dirty filter. full details on how to resolve this can be found on our website at www.dyson.com. Simply click on Support and you will find all the info you need.

If the machine has cut out and wont switch on again after being left for a few hours, it sounds like an engineer will be required to inspect and repair the machine. You can contact our Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1866MYDYSON (US).

Kind regards
Darran

Dies after a few minutes of vacuuming

The thermal cut-off in your machine is activating - this indicates that you have a blockage or a clog in the machine. The machine will turn itself off so that the motor doesn't overheat - the machine will cool off and you'll be able to turn it on after 30 mins to an hour.

Call the Dyson Helpline for a thorough blockage check - they know what they are doing.

Machine turns on, has little suction, then stops working.

It would be helpful to know what model of vacuum cleaner you're talking about. Basically though, your machine has a blockage somewhere (hence very low suction), and is cutting out after just a few minutes because of overheating.  You need to explore the suction hose (or whatever your machine has), find the blockage and remove it. Blockages almost always happen where the pipe-work takes a sharp bend.  In the worst-case scenario (although in almost all modern machines this is not possible) the blockage may be in the vacuum fan enclosure itself, and then you'll probably need a professional to take care of it.
