Maxtor 300GB--can't delete or write

I have a fairly new Maxtor external HD 300GB and used it only with a single PC for several months. I've switched to a mac powerbook and although the computer recognizes it, I can't delete anything from it or write anything to it--the message is that it "can not be modified". Help!

Re: Maxtor 300GB--can't delete or write

IF the drive is formatted as an NTFS File System, any and all Mac Computers will not allow you to write or delete any files. The Simplest solution, is to search Google for a program called "MacFuse" it is a totally free and totally safe program that will allow you to use the drive like normally, without having to reformat it.

Re: Maxtor 300GB--can't delete or write

You didn't specify if the original PC was Windows or MAC.

Is this USB external used on a PC with Windows? If so is it formatted NTFS? If so, Mac OSX and pretty much everything else but windows NT, 2k and XP can not write to NTFS. OSX and Linux will read an NTFS partition but at this time not write to it. If your drive is formatted NTFS, I would say, go to a windows machine and convert it to a FAT 32 Partition. Most everything will both read and write to FAT32.

I installed from original CD and my computer running Vista does not find maxtor ll external HD. Is it compatable with Vista? why does it not find the drive?

Start "Device Manager".
Make sure that the USB devices are "ready" and "enabled".
Then, connect the external USB device.

Can you try the Maxtor external device in some *OTHER* notebook?
If it does not work, then the Maxtor device has a problem.

Light turns on but My Computer does not recognize the drive

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.

Maxtor one Touch 300GB no steady green light

The USB Isn,t supplying/providing enough Power to the device.
Search e-bay or similar for a 2 into 1 USB Cable.
Then power the unit with 2 USB Ports on the Computer.
2 x USB Into 2 x Sockets On P.C. 1 x Into Device Drive.
This will be enough power to operate the Device Correctly.

I,ve done this on several external Drives, never failed for Me.

Maxtor OneTouch II 300Gb can't recover data after a system restore

I had the same problem a few weeks ago.

The way I solved my problem was to make sure when I restored Windows to the default settings that I did it up to the same support packs and hot fixes then when backing up the system with the Maxtor HD. It took me many days to figure this out... was written it the Maxtor HD documentation and it works fine.

Hope this helps.

I had a similar problem a month ago. Go to the Seagate site(They own Maxtor now) Click on the Customer Service and support link, then the warranty link. Supply the serial number and they'll give you the warranty info. I got an RMA number from the site, and received my (Refurbished) drive in about 10 days. They supplied a box to return the original drive, and I apid the postage. A very quick, easy and satisfactory exchange.
