SOURCE: yellow ink cartridge not recognized...

You probably cant. Try replacing the chip with one from an old empty cartridge of the same colour (using superglue or something), as the unrecognized chip is faulty and usually cant be fixed, and you should throw it away as soon as you take it off to avoid confusion. Now try to convince your local ink refill shop to reset the chip for you.maybe tell them your nephew bit the old chip off and ate it.
OR try the web to purchase a "chip resetter" device.

SOURCE: printer says "put cartridge in"; cartridge is already in

When that happens, it's because the printhead has gone out. You need to replace it.QY6-0054-000 around $40.00

I keep getting error message about invalid yellow ink. It is a brand new ink tank.

Check to see if the installed cartridge is the correct one for the printer. If the cartridge is the proper part number, remove the ink cartridge and make sure all the packaging tape has been removed from the copper circuitry strip on the backside of the cartridge. Reinsert the cartridge and try printing again.
If the error continues, remove the cartridge again and clean the copper circuitry strip on the backside of the cartridge, and the contacts inside the printer, by following the instructions below:
1. Use a clean, dry, soft, lint-free cloth. Locate the copper-colored circuitry strip on the back of the cartridge.
2. Wipe the copper-colored strip with the dry cloth. Use an upward motion, from the nozzle end to the top of the cartridge. Do not wipe the nozzle end of the cartridge or touch the nozzle plate. Wipe the contacts only once.
3. To clean the printer contacts, carefully look for fibers or contamination on the electrical contacts inside the carriage assembly, but do not wipe the printer contacts with any object. The contacts in the printer can be damaged if too much pressure is applied during a wiping process. Try to remove any visible attached debris within the carriage assembly by gently pulling the debris off with your fingers. If the carriage contacts show noticeable damage, contact the Customer Care Center listed in the printer's User's Guide.
Reinsert the cartridge and try printing again. If the error continues, the cartridge may need to be replaced.

Thanks.

To solve the printing problem..

# Hold the cartridge upside down, with the bar-code label facing you and take a damp paper towel.
# Use the towel to wipe the printhead of the cartridge on the bottom (where the ink comes out). Wipe the printhead horizontally in one direction only (left to right).
# Continue doing this until it looks clean.
# Then dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure the ink is flowing.
# Next, look inside the printer and locate the carrier that holds ink cartridges. Caution: Make sure the cartridges are not installed at this point.

1. Look for a shiny piece of metal underneath the contacts at the back of the carrier.
2. Take a damp cotton swab (use water only!) and wipe along the bottom of the shiny metal piece. Note: You may need more than one swab.

# Reinstall the cartridges, making sure you snap them correctly into the printer.

Keep getting error message "Ink levels not available" = have a new set of cartridges (they came with printer - printer is brand new)

make sure you have removed the pull off sticky tabs which cover the print head on the new ink cartridge. Then try again. If still not working get a lint free cloth and cover your index finger with the cloth and wipe carefully and gently the area inside the printer where the print cartridge heads contact printer. It usually looks like copper coloured metal strip with swirls or stripes going along it. Obviously unplug the printer from the mains before starting. If this still fails using the same cloth dip cloth into a solution of pure alcohol or similar chemical cleaner (i have used the CD cleaning fluid you get with the CD cleaner disk kits) and wipe the same contact points mentioned earlier, also wipe the contact points on the new cartridges. You may see some streaks of colour on the cloth. You will need to look at the printer software to see which direction to move the cloth when cleaning because the flow of ink inside the cartridge is different dependant of manufacturer. You will need to wipe the cartridge print heads in ONE direction only and never rub back and forth. Once replaced retry the printer. The final thing that I know of is that simply the new cartridges are faulty. This does happen even with new products. I suggest you either take the whole thing back or just the cartridges. you wont know untill you try another set if ink cartridges if its the printer or the cartridges.

HP will not recognise new cartridge

The problem you are describing with the yellow cartridge sounds like ink starvation possibly due to a clogged print head or an air bubble in the print head. Since the machine is so new I would contact HP to get the print head replaced. As for the magenta cartridge, exchanging it for a new one at the store you bought it from should fix the problem. It sounds like the chip on the one you have is either damaged or wasn't set to read full ink levels.
