Question about Computers & Internet

I inserted a CD ROM into the optical drive panel on my Dell Inspiron 545MT. Nothing happens. I sent to My Computer, removable disk E and clicked on it. Message: please insert a disk into drive E. The same thing happens when I click on drive F, G, H, and I. How do I get my CD ROM to start?

It seems that you're CDROM drive is missing and those drive E, F and other are you card reader , so to check what is the problem here it will be better if we check the status of your CDROM drive under device manager, To do this follow this steps, Right click Mycomputer>Properties>hardware tab>Device manager, under device manager look for your CDROM drive just right click on it and select uninstall and once its uninstalled restart the computer and that should correct the problem........

You follow this steps to correct the problem, but still the same problem it will be better if you unplug/replug the CDROM drive and there's also a chance that the CDROM is already bad and needs replacement...

    1. Uninstall all CD writing and recording programs installed on your computer. You may do this by using Add or Remove Programs, or a reliable third-party program uninstaller, such as Perfect Uninstaller.
    2. Open Start menu, select Run, type regedit, and then press Enter to open the Registry Editor window.
    3. Navigate to the following registry entry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965- E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    4. In the right-pane, right-click on UpperFilters and delete it.
    5. Confirm your decision when a confirmation message box is displayed.
    Note: Do not delete UpperFilters.bak
    6. Next, right-click on LowerFilters and delete it.
    7. Confirm your decision when a confirmation message box is displayed.
    Note: Do not delete LowerFilters.bak
    8. Restart your system.
    9. Reinstall the CD recording and writing programs and try to use them again.

If you have there Nero or Roxio you can uninstall those but if not go ahead with the next step.......

The problem here is the CDROM software is there but there's a chance that the drive is already bad, so if possible for you to unplug/replug the CDROM drive from the computer that will be better to refresh the connection of it to your computer....

  • Mark Gil
    Mark Gil Nov 18, 2009

Yes you need to open the computer to do that... make sure you turn off the computer before you do that , that will a good thing to do to refresh the CDROM drive to your computer....

Got Dell Inspiron 2650 2002 from a friend, free. Want to restore to factory settings. How? Installed Windows XP and Norton Anti Virus

Hi and welcome to fixya!

There are two ways to restore this machine to factory settings;

First is thru the Recovdery partition in the hard disk itself:

  • 1 Close any windows currently open and click the Inspiron's "Start" button. Select "Shut Down" and choose the "Restart" option.
  • 2 Tap "F8" when the Dell image appears on the screen. Continue tapping the key until the advanced boot menu loads.
  • 3 Scroll down to "Repair Your Computer" and press "Enter" to access the DataSafe local backup screen. Click "Next." Select "Dell Factory Image Recovery and DataSafe options."
  • 4 Click the "Restore without preserving new or changed files" radio button and click "Next." Click "Next" three more times and click "Restart" to restore the disk drive to its original condition. Follow the on-screen prompts to set your operating system settings.

If the hdd was already repartitioned or corrupted, the second option should work:

  • 1 Insert the Dell recovery disk in your Inspiron's optical drive and close the "AutoPlay" window when it appears. Shut down any other open programs. Click "Start" and select "Restart."
  • 2 Tap "F2" as soon as the Dell image appears on the laptop's screen. Scroll to the "CD-ROM" option and press "Enter." Tap any key when you see the "Press any key to boot" option.
  • 3 Press "Enter" when the setup screen appears. Press "F8" and highlight the Dell's hard drive partition. Press "Enter."
  • 4 Follow the instructions on the screen to choose the Inspiron's operating system options. Click "Finish" and remove the recovery disk from the optical drive. Click "Start" and select "Restart."
Hope this helps!

My CD-rom will not work after inserting CD's or DVD will not rev-up what wrong and what should I Do I Have Inspiron 531????

1.The laser optical eye of the CD-ROM drive may be dirty, and needs cleaning.
If the optical eye is dirty, it won't read the information on the disk you install.

A) Computer on, Windows loaded, open the tray of the DVD-ROM drive. (Or DVD burner drive. Whichever drive you are referring to. DVD-R/RW)
Shut the computer down normally. (Start>Turn Off Computer>Shut Down)

Unplug the computer from power.
Use a can of compressed air fror computers, and spray air into the DVD-ROM drive.

The optical eye, is located on the bottom of the DVD-ROM drive. (Or burner drive)
The opening in the bottom of the tray, that comes out for your disk, is where you spray the air.

You won't be able to see the optical eye, so how will you know you are spraying the air at the correct place?

If you start at the front of the bottom of the DVD-ROM drive, and work your way towards the back, you will clean the optical eye. Spray across from side to side, and in rows, as you proceed towards the rear.

(Air will make it's way through, and reach the optical eye. The optical eye is not visible, as it can be harmful to the human eye when operating.
Laser.
When the tray is closed the optical eye is exposed. It is not exposed to where it can harm the computer user.

More information that may be helpful, in understanding where the optical eye is located,

Scroll down to the heading - CD-ROM drives. Also view the photos down on the right, and the animated GIF.

How a CD Player Works. Same principle for your DVD-ROM and DVD burner drives )

2.Make Windows reinstall the drivers.
This solution requires physically removing the flat ribbon cable from the back of the DVD-ROM/DVD burner drive, then reattaching it.

Software advice of Updating the drivers, Rollback the drivers, or downloading, and installing the drivers, doesn't always work, or doesn't work.

If the physical solutions I am providing here does not work, we will proceed to the software solutions if you wish. (Comment)

1.Computer off, and unplugged from power. Open the computer case,

Dell Support - Dell Inspiron 531 Desktop PC - Manuals - Documentation - Removing and Installing Parts,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/inspd531/en/OM/parts.htm#wp1595069

(Removing the computer cover)

CAUTION!
BEFORE you reach inside you need to relieve your body of Static electricity!

Not trying to freak you out, just needed to catch your attention.
Static electricity, can fry out the delicate computer hardware components, inside your computer.

Touch the metal frame of the computer case.

Computer unplugged from power you are safe.
Touch the metal frame of the computer case, (AFTER you unplug the computer), the computer is safe.

In the above Manual documentation - Removing and Replacing Parts, click on - Drives

Scroll down to the heading - CD or DVD Drive
(Towards the bottom of the page)

Unplug the DATA cable from the CD-ROM drive.
(No.2 in the illustration)

[The two optical drives you have are SATA drives. Dell indicates you have a DVD-ROM drive, (Plays CD's and DVD's), and a DVD burner drive.
(Plays CD's and DVD's, and records)

DVD-R/RW is a 'Burner drive'.

If the information above is correct, you have a SATA power cable, and a SATA Data cable.
(The Data cable transfers information from the optical drive, to the computer, and vice-versa)

The SATA power cable connector, is longer than the Data cable connector.
The power cable connector has 15 pins.
The Data cable connector has 7 pins.

Information,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SATA

Scroll down to the heading,
Data

Look to the right at the photo. This is a SATA Data cable, and it's connector.
Yours may not be a bent 90 degree elbow, but it will have the L shape in the connector, and 7 pins.

Scroll down to the heading Power Supply. Look down to the right at the photo of the 15 pin SATA power cable connector.
This is Not the cable/connector you want to unplug.

Unplug the SATA Data cable from the optical drive you're referencing to.
Press the Power On button in, and hold it in for a count of Five seconds.
Let go of the Power On button.
Do this two more times.

Plug the SATA Data cable back in.
Close the computer case.
Plug the computer back into power.
WAIT 1 minute.
Turn the computer on. Try the drive.

Cannot get CD-ROM to work,to come up on screen.

Ok with that you need to insert the disc and then go into the my computer section of your computer and then in the CD rom drive you should see the disc and you will click on it to start the process. However if that does not work then your CD rom drive is defective and you need to purchase a new one.

CD drive won't read cd's

If you have any windows cd sent by Dell together with your system when you first purchased it, try booting on it by doing this---> Press F12 as soon as you see the Dell Logo, then select onboard/CD Rom or anything that says CD/DVD on the option by pressing enter. If you're being asked, press any key to continue -> Press spacebar immediately. This will load to the window setup. If you have reached the menu option that says:  1. Press Enter to install Windows 2. Press R for Recovery 3. Press F3 to quit

Press Enter to enter the setup. Then if you were able to reach the license agreement asking  you to press F8, that means that your CD rom drive is working as designed. I can assume that the reason why the CD rom drive is not reading any media is because of a possible filter issue on the registry.
Let me know first if the steps I have provided you worked. Good Luck!
