Question about Computers & Internet

3 Answers

Hi, When I click Start/Run/dxdiag on my windows screen, I get this message in a window called DxDiag Error: "Error: Problem getting extra sound info, result code = 0x80070057 (Invalid Argument(s))". My DirectX Version is 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904). My soundcard is : Asus Xonar D2X PCI-E. Is there a way or two to fix this error? Thanks again.

    Hi Marked,

I've Uninstalled the sound card and restarted the computer then took a look at dxdiag to see if error message was there...yes it was.. But notice that I didn't reinstall the sound card yet. Should I? Then check again the "dxdiag"? Tell me what you think, Marked.

    Hi again,

I've reinstalled the sound card drivers, but to no avail. I've also checked for new drivers with "Driver Detective" but none showed up. Now what? Plan B, if there's any? Thanks for your help in advance, Marked.

    Hi,

I did what you were suggesting, same box appears. I also checked for conflicts but no conflicts were found. Do you have any other plans to remove that annoying message?

This error indicates your soundcard is not configured correctly as the default device. This can happen if you've got an onboard soundcard as well as an additional soundcard. To fix this do the following:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type mmsys.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Click the Audio tab.
Once there, you will see all available soundcards. Select the one you wish to become your default (or the onboard card if that's your only soundcard). Then click on OK and restart your computer. You should find that the error has gone away.

Apparently this is a common problem with your MB. The problem is there's a conflict with the recommended driver for the soundcard. A workaround is to install a different audio driver (Essence STX). Below are links for proven results:

    Vista

    XP

It's a shame Asus doesn't provide adequate support for this problem as evidenced in their own forum.

Try uninstalling all device drivers for your sound card from Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel, then make sure all audio devices for your sound card are removed from Device Manager.
The next step will be to reboot the computer. When it starts, it will detect your sound card again & prompt for the drivers. After the drivers have been installed, your problem will be resolved.

If this does not work, try to make sure that your sound card is not experiencing any resource conflicts with other hardware, by checking the properties of your sound card in Device Manager. If you find any resource conflicts, determine which resource is having the conflict (IRQ, DMA, I/O Memory Address Range), then manually assign your sound card a free resource. The list of free & non-free resources is available through dxdiag.

You can go to device manager and uninstall your sound card from there, To open device manager Right click Mycomputer>Properties>Hardware tab> Device manager and once you're there look for the Asus Xonar D2X and then right click on it and click uninstall and after that restart the computer and that should correct the problem......

Yes you need to reinstall the soundcard and if possible check if there's any updated driver for you and better use that in reinstalling the sundcard....

Dont use driver detective in locating updated driver, better if you go direct to the sound card manufacturer web site and check it from there and manually load the updated driver....

The images i load for setting as a wall paper is stretched one and it is too big for the screen. How do i make it a portrait size

Try downloading this program to resize your wallpaper. Generally on Windows you simply right-click an area on your desktop and click :properties" to configure your background. The simplest thing to do is find your screen resolution and do a [Google] search for example: 1440 x 900 3D landscape, Define what you nedd and match your resolution. In WinXP just click the start icon and click "RUN", Copy and paste this command into the run box: dxdiag.exe a window will appeaar and you click "yes". When the new window opens click "Display" then scroll down to "Current Display Mode".

In Windows 7 and Vista click on the start icon and type the dxdiag.exe command into the search window and it'll appear in the above menu. Double click that item and proceed to find your resolution as stated above.

Hope this helps,

Nate P.
