How is it shutting down? Is it going through the windows shut-down process? Is it suddenly powering off completely with no warning(even an error message or blue screen flashing as it shuts off is a warning)? Is it locking up forcing you to power it off?
Do you have the system plugged into the AC power when it occurs or are you running it on battery?
Are you able to power is right back on, and if so does it work fine after that or does the problem occur again over a shorter period of time.
If the issue only occurs while running on battery, then it may be the battery otherwise it's very unlikely that the battery itself is causing this issues.
Flashing the bios and looking for hardware updates won't hurt, but most likely will not fix the issue.
IF you are getting warnings of any sort, even a very brief error message or blue screen right before it shuts down, then it's likely to be a problem in the operating system. Problems like this can be very difficult to pinpoint unless you can see an actual error message to give you direction to go on. If it does appear to be a problem with windows, then you will most likely need to reload windows to correct it.
If it occurs with zero warning while on AC power then it's probably a physical problem in the system. This type of symptom often occurs when the system is getting overheated inside causing the CPU to not be able to function. If this is the case then the system will need to be repaired. With a laptop, this usually means sending it to Gateway's service depot. If it's in warranty, then call tech support and they can set up a service for you. They can still repair it out of warranty, but you will be billed for the repair/parts.

You got to pinpoint the problem first.  First flash the BIOS and see if that helps.  2nd look for battery firmware updates.  3rd remove rechargeable battery and power the thing just off of the charger.  Did the problem go away?  Get you a new battery cause the battery is fu.k.d up.
Cheers old chap.

Hello, my Marantz BP8002 keeps shutting down intermitantly with different type disks. Does not matter if it's Blu-ray, DVD, or DVD-R. It will sometimes play for 2 minutes and shut down completely....

If it shuts off at different time intervals, there might be a loose connection that needs to be solder. Ask for a repairman to check it.

My gateway 510x keeps shutting itself off. Sometimes after 5 minutes of booting up sometimes after 30 seconds. What could be the problem? Tried removing dust from the inside but that did not help.

sounds like your processor fan shut down and now your processor itself shuts off when it begins to over heat replace fan asap and don't keep trying to turn it on because you'll burn it out

After being on for a while sometimes 10 minutes, smoetimes 2 hours, the projection loses color and flickers, I can hear a squeeling noise, and eventually shuts down

Mine does the exact same thing, but usually before it overheats and shuts off. This started after I replaced the lamp the third time. I haven't found an outside solution to this, but pointing a floor fan at it to keep it cooler works for me. Did you ever find a resolution?

Laptop shutting off

There might be a setting in the BIOS that shuts down the computer when the processor gets too hot. so, getting better cooling or turning off the setting will stop it. but, if you disable the setting, the Processor could overheat and explode.

If you have an ice maker in the freezer compartment try raising the bail arm and shutting it off. It is possible that an ice maker will increase your run time.

Shutting off

i have the same problem...laptop randomly shuts down, but its even done it within a minute of turning it on so i don't think its a heat issue. Sometimes it'll run for over an hour with no problem and never shut down, but other times it randomly shuts down sometimes within a minute, sometimes maybe 10 mins, sometimes 30 mins or more ...its maddening! i'd love to find a solution if anyone's found one. Thanks.

Gateway 3550 Internet shuts off every 10 minutes

I have a gateway laptop with Vista that does the same thing.
In the control panel/power settings, ID what power scheme you are using.
I found that when on power saver mode the wireless and CPU were throttled down to conserve power. In Vista you can adjust these up to max power while keeping the other features on the default power saver settings. It improved the dropped connections dramitically. To end the finger pointing I signed up for connection monitoring using DSL reports (DSLreports.com) This service sends a ping to your modem every 10 minutes and charts your ISP uptime. Using this service I was able to determine that it was not my ISP.
Good luck.
