Hello, Simon.
I believe that your daughter's way of shutting the laptop down didn't affect the power.
There are several common reasons why a computer will not power on, other than the obvious (problem outlet or dead battery):
1. Power strip
2. Bad power adapter
3. Bad or loose power jack
If the laptop is running on current, and it's plugged into a power strip, flip the switch off/on.
If the laptop has power, could be a bad power adapter.
If the power connection at the laptop is loose, or the power goes off and on if you wiggle the power adapter cable, the power jack (inside the laptop) is faulty and either needs repair (possibly soldering) or replacement.
Hope this helps.
There is no reset button on a lap top. If you have errors you have to reboot it and if that doesn't fix it then you need to reformat the OS to resolve the problem unless the hard drive is bad..
I do apologize as Fix Ya doesn't add previous comments to the main post and they do not come up until a reply is posted.. But It shouldn't just die from closing. It would go into standby or hibernate mode. I would start with the power cord and make sure its getting power out of the end that connects to the laptop, if you have a volt meter that would help, you can also test the battery to see if it has a good charge. This would let us kow if you actually have power coming in to eliminate a bad laptop and may just be a bad power cord...
Not neccessarily.I would start with the easy things first. The power cord gets the most abuse and I have replaced 2 on my personal laptops in 5 years. You always wanna go with the easy/inexpensive things first!!

You can purchase an OS disk such as these.
Assuming your boot sequence is set up where your CD/DVD drive is read
before your HD you ought to just be able to pop it in and follow the
steps.
If you don't even want an OS, which I doubt, you can just format your
HD with DOS or get a third party software such as Boot and Nuke and
wipe your HD clean.
Did you get a recovery disk with it?
IF so, use that. But you will lose any saved data doing that.
Or download and burn linux system rescue cd which works on any os system and pc.
HI,
There is no master reset button for it.If the windows is stuck or not responding then you need to press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
And if that is not the problem then are you talking about restoring the whole operating system to the factory defaults? If so then you will need the recovery discs provided with your laptop to do this.
NOTE:Restoring the Pc to the Factory Setings will delete all the data and reinstall the factory defaults data.So make sure you backup any of your personal stuff(Like Music,Movies,Documents,Pictures, contacts) first on an external hard drive or DVD/CD.
If you don't have a recovery disc then you can purchase it by contacting HP from the below link. Please click on the below link for more details.
