Try replacing the connection cable a worn cable sometimes is the cause of these problems, try inserting a usb flash drive and if the system detects it then do that replace the cable and if you replace it and still not working a device driver for the external is required, try also to plug it on other computers and if it works fine then theres a problem with youre usb port

For some reason it happens that the power comes out from usb port is not enough to trigger the External Hdd on
if you have a long usb extension or using the front usb ports also it could happens (avoide them) .
