5100 is a Carriage Home Position Error. Make sure there is nothing blocking the carriage that cartridges are installed properly. also make sure the plastic encoder strip is clean as well. There is a bit of troubleshooting and diy repairs that can work. but you should really be confident in what your doing because as with anything that you repair it is possible to cause more damage. If you still need further assistance please let me know.
Thank you,

My canon MP480 keeps poping up a 5100 error

That error is a Carriage error, which means that the printer carriage (the bit that holds the cartridges) is unable to move or similar.

Make sure you've installed the cartridges correctly and that the grey lever that holds down the printhead is in the down and locked position.

You may find that you've installed the printhead incorrectly so worth pulling out the cartridges, removing the printhead and then reseating it so the lever goes down to a horizontal position. Then reinsert the cartridges.

Canon PIXMA MP480. Print head slams all the way left, then all the right at startup. Error code 5100. Have looked the encoder strip, cleaned it, looks OK. Carriage seems to move freely. Wondering if...

The above is a link where you can enter '5100' and it will return 3 possible solutions for the error code 5100.

Reset the device when it is not functioning properly. If the device is not functioning properly or to clear memory, reset it.
  1. On the operator panel, press the button. (The display will go blank.)

Note: It may be necessary to unplug the power cord if pressing the ON button does not shut off the printer.

  2. Wait approximately ten seconds and then press the button again.

  3. Wait until the device has completed its cycling process before submitting another job request.

Note: It may be necessary to unplug the power cord and retry if the above steps do not clear the error.
--- Secondly, it says that it could have 'packing' material in the printer when new, blocking the movement of the printhead, but I don't think that's the case since you say the carriage seems to move freely.

How do I fix a 5100 error on an MP480 printer?

Cancel printing, turn off the machine. Then clear the jammed paper or protective material that is preventing the FINE Cartridge Holder from moving. Be careful not to touch the components inside the machine. The machine may not print out properly if you touch it. Turn the machine back on. If the problem is not resolved, contact your Canon service representative.

Printer reporting 5100 error. ink cartridge not moving to centre power light alternating with fault light still under guarantee but will cost £16.00 to send for repair canon cartridges installed

Hi there try to remove the carriages and clean the printer inside by alcohol. Then use some oil on the cartridge rack. Now fit them back and try. If that time its not work then you need to visit printer service center. Thank you.

Error message 5100. cartridges wont eject either

Solution 1:
Clean the timing strip.

Solution 2:
The purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) may be not lubricated well enough .

Lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps); this repair probably require to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism.

Error 5100 on startup

5100 code means that the carriage is not moving, which you knew already, All you can do is make sure there is nothing in the way for it to travel smoothly, If it won't come out of the corner you need a shop to look at it, You should have warranty till Dec. 2009. 1-800-828-4040
