Hello,
Press [MODE]. Use arrow down to go to second line Float. Use left arrow key to move cursor to a number other than zero and press [ENTER]. If you highlight 2 your results will have 2 decimal digits, but if 0 is highlighted all results will be integers (no decimals).
Hope it helps.

Press "MODE" and select the display mode. Bear in mind that on any finite device most numbers must be rounded off. For example, no matter the display mode the value 1/3 cannot be shown exactly.

My ti 83 will turn on when i press the clear thing but when i try to put something in nothing happens

Hi imagenius1,

You need to free up some memory. Try clearing your RAM memory. Your calculator should operate properly afterward.

Press [2nd] [MEM] [7] [1] [2]

If the steps above did not reset the memory to your Ti 83 family calculator try the procedures below.

Please be prepared to re-install the calculator's OS if you run through this process.

If you have a straight Ti 83 without the Plus or, Silver Edition label goto (Procedure 2) below. If your Ti calculator is a Ti 83 Plus or better goto (Procedure 1).

(Procedure 1).

  1. Try a new set of AAA batteries.

  2. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [CLEAR] key. While holding [CLEAR], reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display the message "RAM Cleared". Release the [CLEAR] key and, then press [CLEAR] one more time to remove the message.

  1. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [DEL] key. While holding [DEL], reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display "Waiting...Please install calculator software now". Follow the instructions for the TI-83 family or TI-84 Plus family to reinstall the calculator operating system.

  2. Steps to re-installing the operating system:
~Connect the TI Connectivity cable between the PC and the calculator.
~Click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OSDownloader
~Follow the on-screen directions to reinstall the calculator's OS. If you could not install the new OS on your calculator goto step 4.

  3. Remove all of the batteries including the round lithium battery for 5 minutes. After the 5 minute period, reinsert all of the batteries and turn the calculator on. Adjust the contrast if necessary.

  4. If the above process did not reset your calculator. Try re-doing (Procedure 1) and, extend the time in step 4, by 5 minutes to 10 minutes before you put all the batteries back in the calculator.

(Procedure 2).

For a straight Ti 83 without the Plus or, Silver Edition label try the procedure below.

  1. Try a new set of AAA batteries.

  2. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [ON] key for 20 seconds. Reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on.

I ask my TI-83 Plus to calculate (-64)^(3/2) The TI-83 Plus says the answer is -512i, but I think the answer should be 512i. Is the calculator wrong or am I?

You're both right, in a way. (-64)^3 is -262144. The square root of that is +/- 512i. Take your choice as to the sign.

For what it's worth, the TI-84, TI-86, TI-89, and the HP 50g all go with the negative value.

If an operating system (OS) update fails or is interrupted, the calculator will be in an inoperable state with the message Waiting...Please install calculator software now.The most common cause of a transfer being interrupted is updating theoperating system on a calculator with low batteries. Sceen keeps saying RAM cleared even when I didn't clear it.

There is a small round battery under a small rectangular cover just above the other triple A batteries. It has most likely gone flat. try replacing it, then see if it works properly.

My ti-83 plus has OS problem

That happened to me a few years ago - my friend tried to give me his operating system, and my calculator was all locked up like that for a while. There's some kind of reset code - pressing some buttons while putting a battery in - but it's been a while, so I don't remember which buttons.
