MY LAPTOP WONT START

When I try to install Windows XP on my laptop it won't let me it tells me that it cannot find any hard drives on my laptop therefore it cannot install Windows XP so press enter to restart.
Then when it restarts I get these messages on a black screen:
1. Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application
2. The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.
3. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.
4. If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

Your registry files are either corrupted or missing. I've recovered from this before by copying a backup registry from a restore point. If your system was stolen then it's probably beyond repair, the theif probably tried to delete the Windows folder. Your best bet is to restore the system using the CDs or DVDs it came with.

If you go into the BIOS, is the hard drive detected?

Did you just install this drive from another laptop?

It doesn't make sense that it would try to boot to win98, since the original OS was XP Media Center to begin with.

Let me know, and I can help you further.

Wow, you're lucky it was even returned to you.

Try booting from the XP cd, and go into recovery console.

Try formatting that way (if it's even detected)

type "format C:/" without the quotes.

It's possible that beings win98 is FAT32, and Xp is NTFS, it may not be recognizing the partition. Why it isn't seeing it in BIOS has me baffled.

Then try rebooting from cd again, and see if it recognizes it through the usual xp install.

Somehow your MBR (Master Boot Record) likely got corrupted or possibly your hard drive went bad coincidentally.

Simply, you will start your computer from your Windows CD/DVD install disk, then when at a DOS prompt ( D:\ ) you will then type: FDISK /MBR (press enter).

Find your Operating System install DVD and start your computer with it, then follow instructions within this discussion:
Restore Windows XP MBR without Windows XP disc

Alternatively, review my search results for other instructions:

HARD DRIVE NOT EXIST ERROR!!!

If you installed Linux successfully on your hard disk then the hard disk is OK.
If you are installing Windows Xp and it does not detect the hard disk but the BIOS detects the hard disk then -
The problem is that XPinstallation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on adisk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then,XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP.The FIX.Go into the BIOS anddisable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is aIDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows hasbeen installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver),then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

The hard disk from the laptop has died - something to be expected on a laptop this old.
Extremely easy to fix - just buy a new hard disk, put it in the laptop and install whatever version of Windows you like.

What is your problem specifically? Is it that there is no hard disk detected when you try to install windows xp?

Try using third party software to detect the hard disk on your laptop
Try this link. It will basically give you your hard drive driver while installing windows xp. You will also need an external floppy disk drive if you dont have diskette drive in your laptop.

My HP Pavillion DV9000 Laptop wont detect the hard drive

When I tried first installing windows XP on my laptop, I had the problem that I already had Windows Vista on it, but wanted to delete it and install Windows XP. Whenever I tried installing XP, it kept telling me that there was no hard drive. I searched through all the forums on this topic and finally found out that I had to change a setting in the BIOS called native SATA driver support.

My assumption is that once they changed the mainboard on your PC, the bios settings changed as well. Try searching through your BIOS, it might have a similar setting that you might need to change.
