SOURCE: water in washing machine from emptying sink.

A washing machine filling with water overnight or when not in use has two possible causes. Either the water is running into the washing machine from the sink ( If the drain hose is connected directly to the u-bend under the sink ) or one of the water valves isn't shutting off properly and water is dripping slowly but surely into the washing machine. The latter problem can take several hours before the water level rises high enough inside the washing machine to be visible.
It's easy to track down the cause of water entering the washing machine when not in use. If turning off the hot and cold water taps stops it, then it's one of the water valves not shutting off properly, and needs replacing. It's just a process of elimination to find out which one it is. If not, the water is likely to be coming from the sink (use above link). Sometimes by removing the soap dispenser drawer and carefully observing inside the soap dispenser you can clearly see water dripping in at regular intervals.
Blocked water valve filters: I've come across cases where a filter in the water valve has become caked in a brown sludgy mud-like substance due to disturbances in the plumbing. This could be because of work carried out on internal plumbing or even after workmen have turned the water off in the street to work on the water mains. After the water is turned back on, muddy or gritty water can enter the household pipework and when you use the washing machine it can draw this contaminated water into it.
In this scenario very fine grit or muck can get past the filter and stop it shutting off properly, or the filter is so blocked that water pressure to the valve is reduced enough to prevent the valve shutting off properly. Remove the water valve filter with some pliers and thoroughly clean it out. If the fault persists, replace the valve.
Important things to watch out for are -

  1. Washing machine water valves need a certain amount of water pressure to actually ensure the water is shut off properly. Therefore, if your water pressure is very low, it can seep in past the closed valve. This problem is less likely to suddenly appear unless your water pressure has suddenly dropped. It's more likely to be a problem with a new installation. ( Related: Low water pressure and washing machines )
  2. A faulty tap can mean that although you turn it off, the water supply isn't actually cut, so be careful of assuming if the fault still occurs, that you have definitely discounted the water valves. If unsure, you would have to disconnect the hot and cold fill hoses to ensure the water supply is properly cut when the taps are turned off. This problem is a lot more common with water taps that turn off with a red or blue plastic lever.
  3. If the washing machine has just been filling, you may get some dripping of water into the soap dispenser for a few minutes after. Don't mistake this for a valve not shutting off properly.
  4. If the water ever gets turned off while work is carried out on the water mains in the street or for major plumbing in your home, run lots of water in the house through taps at the sinks until it runs clear after the water is turned back on.
Faulty water valves should be replaced or there is risk of flooding.

SOURCE: our hotpoint WMA22 washer will fill with water and

Sounds like a blocked filter to me.
Remove lower rear panel of washer, remove large black hose fastened to bottom of drum, remove and clean filter inside hose, check pump for blockage at same time. You probably will not need to replace any parts
Please rate my solution.
Thanks.

SOURCE: Fabric Softner tray is full of water and won't

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,
This is a common problem with many machines.
I suspect that it is the conditioner/softener tray which needs a thorough clean,
paying particular attention to the sentences in BOLD ;-0)
-------------------------------------
Remove the complete drawer. To do this you will have to do one of the following-

  • Top catch- push down the lip/catch at the middle rear and pull the drawer out (that's how our Bosch one is removed)
  • release the catches underneath (our daughter's Indesit) or
  • lift upwards on the tray as it is coming out to clear the lip underneath.
One of these should enable you remove it
(I am having to guess some of the following!)
Once out identify which tray is for the conditioner- the others are simply 'chutes' and open-ended.
It will normally have some sort of cover over it which you must remove to expose the little stuck up pipe/tube. On some models there is just a small individual cap over the tube. The tube is down which the conditioner and water should siphon. It is likely to be blocked by 'gunge'- a mix of powder and conditioner. The whole of the tray, particularly this pipe and the bit which fits over it, must be completely clean and clear for it to operate correctly. It is worthwhile checking fairly regularly.

If this has assisted you please consider a 4 thumbs up for the rating.
Thanks and good luck!

I need to get a new lid strike. At this moment though, there is water filled to the top of my washer and if it fills anymore it will spill over. Is there a way to drain the washer with out it filling up...

Remove the drain hose from the stand pipe at the wall and place it in a large bucket. Simple gravity will allow the water to empty from the wash tub. That is, as long as the drain hose and/or drain pump is not clogged.

Another method is to use a wet/dry shop vac to pull the water from the tub basin. Depending on the size shop vac, you will have to empty it several times as the wash tub capacity is usually about 33 gallons.

If you need further guidance, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Had blocked drain so water from sink backed up into d.washer. Drain clear but d.washer keeps emptying and won't fill

Make sure drain hose from dishwasher is higher than water inlet if not it will do just like a washing machine if the drain hose is lower than water level it will empty while filling.

> Home / Repairs DIY washing machine advice (part 8) Washing machine sticks or stops mid-cycle repairs-sm.gif A very common fault on washing machines is when the program timer fails to complete the cycle and stops part way through. Many people blame the program timer for this but although it is a possible cause, there are many more likely causes for this fault. The program will stick if the heater isn't working, if the thermostat fails, if it can't fill up with cold water for the rinses, if it can't empty the water etc. There are too many possible causes of this fault to be able to give anything other than rudimentary advice. However, the common causes of a washing machine sticking that can easily be fixed are filling and emptying problems.
Check that the cold water supply is available to the washing machine, which is a common cause for sticking on rinses. If the washing machine appears to stop mid-cycle and isn't filling with water on rinses then see Washing machine won't fill with water (or no water goes into washing machine) before calling an engineer. If the washing machine can't drain the water out then it will stick on the rinses, or it will abort with an error code. If you can see water still inside the washing machine then check the following advice Washing machine won't empty water

Continues to fill, not holding water

The drain hose might be too low. Make sure the drain hose is at least three feet above the floor.

If the above adjustment doesn't produce positive results, replace the control.
