Question about Maytag MFD2560HES Bottom Freezer French Door Refrigerator

Freezer compartment is thawing

Following a power failure (which may have no bearing) I've noticed the freezer compartment gradually thawing over two days. This is an ice generating machine, but the icemaker is set to off.

Can hear fan running constantly and there is good flow of cool air to the freezer compartment.

The settings were 3/3 for cooling the refrigerator compartment and freezer. I've set them to 4/4 with no change in symptoms over 12 hours.

At about 4 minute intervals there is a buzzing that continues for about 5-10 seconds. I observed the icemaker and it is not doing anything during this occurence. The arm is in the up/off position.

There appears to be no obstructions in the refrigerator or the freezer that would affect air flow.

Not sure this is the precise model number.

After examining the "guts" I have the following info.

    Model Number is MBF2558HEW

    S/N 10827507EN

The intermittent noise appears to be from the sealed motor/compressor unit. Dimming of the refrigerator lights indicates a heavy load as in starting a motor. The housing is warm to the touch but has no vibration that would indicate operation.

Condenser coils are clean enough tubes from compressor are neither warm nor cool.

    My guess:

    1. Motor may be frozen so it cannot start and so heats up each time the switch is activated (causing the intermittent noise).

    2. The refrigerator section has stayed relatively cool as air is passed over the existing frozen foot and from there to the refer.

I hope this is not the case and would like to hear any other possibilities.

    Thanks

Both the compressor and motor is not starting i feel. you can try as our friend said. but you can try keeping it off for more time(like half a day or so) it will allow everything to settle down and start freshly.
if then also the machine dosent start means there is some part defect. you will have to open it and check if internally.

thank you sir

Sounds like the compressor seized. The buzzing you hear is the compressor trying to kick on.

I noticed that happens a lot with air conditioners if power is interrupted when the compressor is running.

Did you try unplugging it for 20-30 minutes?

Sometimes letting it sit unpowered relieves the pressure that was built up in the compressor, making it easier for it to start.

Water dripping from freezer into refrigerator area and frozen water in freezer

The defrost cycle is melting ice that will not go down the drain tube in the rear of the freezer. This can be a clogged tube due to debris, organic growths or ice blocking flow. What doesn't end up dripping into the fridge ends up freezing in the freezer compartment. Make sure the fridge is level or tilted back slightly.

Unplug the fridge from power. Remove the contents of the freezer and remove the ice maker, back wall plate and floor plate in the freezer section. Remove ice build up on the floor and tray in the freezer by thawing and soaking up water. Flush hot water (use a turkey baster to get at it) at the opening of the drain hose that is connected to the tray to thaw any ice.. once flowing to the evapraor tray under the fridge, mix up 1/2 oz of bleach and 4 oz of water and pour down the tube to kill any bacteria.

Reassemble and restock the freezer. Monitor the temperature of the fresh food (34 deg) and freezer (0 deg) compartments. If you notice the temperatures start to climb, there may be a problem with the defrost timer, terminator, etc. and may require a pro's help.

Good luck!

Ice Maker quit, everything started to thaw out.

Good day,
Limited information. The ice maker will go into auto lockout if the freezer goes above 14 degrees.
Motors make noise.
There is a fan motor behind the back wall, of the freezer compartment. If the machine is turned on, it should run, and you should be able to hear it.
If not, remove the rear panel and inspect.
The second fan motor, is located in the back rear of the machine, behind the rear cover, it should be running as well.
If both are running O.K. then it is in the compressor itself.
A pricey problem, if it's the compressor. Should be checked by a qualified tech.

P.S. If you feel it is a compressor problem, and the unit is less than 5 years of age, then contact your selling dealer. It would be under warranty.

Thank you for using FixYa

Ice maker hasn't worked in years. A couple of days ago food below the ice maker was thawed. Today I felt that the ice maker was hot to the touch. Is there anyway to disengage the power to the ice make

Yes you will need to take the screws that mount the Ice maker to the side of the freezer and unplug the cable plug that is hidden behind the back of ice maker. The only time that element is needed to become hot is the moments before the ice maker drops ice. Thanks, Sea Breeze

My top freezer is producing ice on the floor of the freezer and water is dripping from the freezer to the loer level of the refrigerator.

Your defrost drain hole is frozen over. It must be thawed out.
You can turn the fridge off and let it sit off for 2 days and it will thaw. Or, you can disassemble the freezer panels and use a hair dryer to defrost the drain line at the rear of the freezer compartment. Takes about 2 hours.

Traulsen URS 48 DT Freezer in Freeze/Thaw Cycle/Fridge Side O.K.

I'm not intently familiar with this particular brand, but here's some ideas to check. If the thermostat sticks on, the freezer coils can freeze, blocking air flow and jamming circulation fan. This will cause the temp in freezer compartment to rise. When the ice on the coils thaw, the compartment starts to cool again, but the cycle will continue. Another thought is if this unit has a defrost timer that could be defective. Without seeing the unit, it's hard to determine the exact cause.
Hope this helps.

Freezer works great, as it should, but fridge is only keeping items room temp. I have the setting at the coldest setting: #7. What is wrong?

Here's what I did, I defrosted! I found out that the fridge temp is monitored and maintained by the freezer. Because we had a power outage one night, my freezer thawed while we all slept and then when power came back on, freezer re-froze but this cause an ice build up on the vent on the back wall of the freezer. Well, ice must have been in one (or more) vents, causing blocked air flow in my top half of the refrigerator. I turned the dial in the freezer to "off" which also shuts down power to the fridge half. I then unplugged the refrigerator, hauled all my food items into coolers, opened the freezer door and refrigerator doors and left them open for a little over six hours. I took advantage of this empty fridge and freezer and wiped everything down. After this time frame passed, I plugged the fridge back in, turned the freezer dial to my preferred freezer temp, and wah-lah! Within two hours I had a cold fridge and solid ice cubes in the freezer. I then put all my food items back into their appropriate compartments, and went to work. Bear in mind, a total 24-hour period is needed for the fridge to re-set itself, but still, after two hours the fridge was noticeably cold. Who knew, besides our parents' generation: DEFROST!
