Re: format or intialize card

Try connecting the camera to the computer, or if you have a card reader do it that way.  either way, go to my computer and right click on it and select format choose from any of the File System types, and the computer will do the rest.

Insert the memory card into your camera, then push down on the card until you hear a click. Verify that the memory card is firmly seated in your camera.
  1. Turn on your camera.
  2. Move the pictures/videos from the memory card to your computer desktop or other location
  3. Press the Menu button, then go to the Setup Menu.
  4. Scroll up or down to the Format option, then press the OK button.
  5. Follow the prompts to format the memory card

I don't have the booklet that comes with the the camera and don't have a clue as what it means that card is not intialized

It means that your card needs to be formatted. Download any pics from the card using a card reader since formatting will erase it. Then, insert the card into your camera, go into the menu and find "format"...follow the on-screen instructions. If you need a card reader, this is a great one and only $13 at Walmart. 4559aa4.jpg

My a430 Powershot shows"memory card full" but it is not

hi there.
you cannot reformat your camera but you can reformat your memory card that comes in the camera. for now try resetting this camera :
  1. go into your setup menu and choose "reset" (or intialize)
  2. hold down the menu key for 5 seconds
  3. switch off and switch back on after a few seconds
  4. you should have the camera reset to factory default settings.
but if the camera is new it does not really need to be reset. let me know if there's anything more i can do.

I have pictures stored on my camera and need to transfer them to my memory card. I cannot hook the camera up to the pc because I do not have a cord to transfer the images to pc. How do I transfer them onto...

Press the MENU/OK button. Use cursor-left/right to select the Setup menu (wrench icon). Use cursor-up/down to select "Move images to Card..." and press MENU/OK. Confirm when the confirmation screen comes up.

The above is from the "Move images to Card" section of the manual (page 93 in my copy). If you need a manual, you can download one from the manufacturer's web site at

Is San Disk memory card compatible with Digimax 401 ? I inserted one and got the message card errior.

SD Memory Card is compatible with your Digimax 401 camera. You just need to format the card.
Formatting a memory card
** This is used for formatting the memory card. If you run [FORMAT] on the memory card, all
images, including the protected images, will be deleted. Be sure to download important
images to your PC before formatting the memory card.
** If the memory card is not inserted, the internal memory will be formatted.
** Be sure to format the memory card if you are using a newly purchased or non-initialized
memory card, if it contains data that the camera cannot recognize, or if it contains images
captured with a different camera.

Formatting a Memory Card
1. In any mode other than Voice Recording mode, press the MENU button.
2. Press the LEFT/ RIGHT button and select the [SETUP] menu tab.
3. Select the [FORMAT] menu by pressing the UP/ DOWN button and press the RIGHT button.
4. Select a desired sub menu by pressing the UP/ DOWN button and press the OK button.
- If [No] is selected : The memory card will not be formatted.
- If [Yes] is selected : A [PLEASE WAIT!] message appears and the memory card will be formatted. If you ran FORMAT in Play mode, a [NO IMAGE!] message will appear.
