Only Microsoft can tell you that. Normally there is a sticker on the computer that has the product key on it if it was installed by the computer manufacturer. If you have a product key with the Microsoft watermark on it then it is genuine most likely. The MS Silverlight software used for Microsoft update is designed to identify legitimate copies and reduce pirating. Essentially, if there is more than one copy of a Microsoft product using the same key the system is supposed to flag it and prevent updates. I doubt this really works but that was the thought. Contact Microsoft to verify your software.
Just "click" on the "Windows Genuine Advantage" window that you're seeing, to get instructions on how to "get genuine". Have your credit-card ready. Microsoft will send you software that upgrades your "non-genuine" software.
Pay Microsoft to get it activated as a genuine copy. Or buy legal copy of Windows XP.
Or you may want to take this opportunity to get Windows 7.
First run the windows 7 advisor - click here
Then purchase the OEM version it is cheaper than retail. Do not buy the upgrade version since you have an illegal copy of xp.
If you have no support discs & did not make a recoverty disc then you will have to contact the retailer you purchased the laptop from or Acer themselves. You should have documentation that will detail your product key though without this you may have issues getting the genuine copy of vista reinstalled. An alternative would be to buy a copy of windows 7 (if your laptop can take it) as it is far more stable & streamlined than Vista. or get a genuine copy of XP for cheaper.
Its probably also a good idea to take it back to the local computer guy & demand he reinstalls vista or gives you a genuine copy of XP. You can report him to the police for distributing illegal software too.
Yes, got to www.google.com and type in "microsoft genuine advantage diagnostic tool" download and run it. If it shows not genuine, click on "resolve."
Are you sure that you have a genuine copy of windows? It sounds like you may have been a victim of software piracy. In other words it sounds like someone sold you a computer with a pirated version of windows. If that is indeed the case, you'll need to call Microsoft and plead your case. If you can convince them that you are not the pirate, they will usually validate your copy for you.
Sorry, fixya experts are not permitted to contact customers about a problem through email. Keep posting to this thread until we get it fixed.
this is just a warning that your copy of windows is not genuine, like a copied CD of a genuine CD copy. Don't worry, nothing can happen to you. it's just letting you know windows is not a genuine copy.
