Sounds like your computer is set to boot to the USB first.
If it detects the external Maxtor hard drive it will try to boot to it.
NOT the main drive. No OS no boot.

Two options:
1. Go into the bios and set the first boot device to PC's main drive.
or
2. Simple do not plug in the external drive until the machine boots.
THEN plug it in. :)

The 1st option is probably the best solution.
Nothing serious and you only have to do this once. :)

Good luck!
Hope this helps!

It sounds like you may have "removable devices" set as the 1st item in your boot sequence in BIOS by mistake.

Restart your computer and as it begins to come up, press the appropriate key (sometimes esc, sometimes F12 depending on the computer) and enter your BIOS settings. You may have to restart a couple of times to see hwat the display says to push for BIOS.

Once in, tab over to Boot.
You will see a list going down and it will have items in it such as Hard Drive, USB Storage, CD/DVD, Removable Devices and Network.

This is the sequence your computer looks for to boot up with and find Windows. Your Hard Drive should be the 1st on the list (top). If not. use your down arrow key to move until Hard Drive is highlighted, then press your + key until it's at the top.

Press F10 to Save and Exit, Yes to save changes and let the computer boot up. That should solve your problem.

Verify in the BIOS setup (usually accessible by pressing F2, F12, or Del at boot), "Boot Device" submenu, that the system isn't programmed to also boot from an external device. If it is, it will try to boot off the Maxtor, but won't be able to since there's no OS there.
The system should be configured to start off the internal hard disk, and optionally the CD-ROM. Other options (ROM BIOS, PXE, USB, etc.) are usually best left deactivated or at lowest priority.

I have a Maxtor 500GB. It was working ok but today the green light is blinking and the external memory is not conected with the computer. I have tried using different USB ports, conecting an desconecting...

you could disassemble the case and remove the drive. it could then be connect via an external controller such as(http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2477926&CatId=3770) and test if the drive itself is good in which case it is the controller in the case.
cheapest way I can think of to diagnose these external enclosures

My hd maxtor basics 1T tries to start but fails. I tried to change usb pc etc.. semza result. you have an idea? thanks

If the hard drive fails to it may be because the usb port is not giving sufficient power to boot.
You should try to plug the hard disk with the usb cable and with the power cable to electric power. This could give the hard drive sufficient power to boot

I installed from original CD and my computer running Vista does not find maxtor ll external HD. Is it compatable with Vista? why does it not find the drive?

Start "Device Manager".
Make sure that the USB devices are "ready" and "enabled".
Then, connect the external USB device.

Can you try the Maxtor external device in some *OTHER* notebook?
If it does not work, then the Maxtor device has a problem.

Connecting problem

Boot your system with external drive unconnected, then go to add new hardware. then plug in maxtor and follow guide, if this is not of any help then unplug and replug drive IE switch off replug and switch on your Maxtor. After a while when all the software gets together all will be harmonious and groovy.

My pc dose not come up my maxtor basics external desktop hard drive

What OS are you using? Windows 98SE does not always recognize exterrnal hard drives. Try the external HD on a computer running Windows XP and see if that works. If it works on WinXP and not Win98SE or possibly WinME the External HD is good.
