Question about Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-F717 Digital Camera

2 Answers

I am having a problem with my camera. It works in the sense that it turns on and takes pictures. However, the both the digital lcd display and normal finder display remain black, even after removing the lens cap. I let a friend borrow it a little while ago and I suspect they may have changed some settings, but I'm not sure what to look for to fix it. When it takes pictures, they come out looking very distorted and strange. But, it does take pictures, the flash goes off and a picture records. can you help? Thank you!

Sony had a certain issue with the CCD chip on this camera. If it's this issue, they'll fix it free plus $20 until March 2010.

Are you saying the lcd screen works but the pictures are just distorted or the screen doesn't work at all, even when you try to go into the menu. I think your "friend" is to blame here...your problems have nothing to do with changed settings.

How can I get the LCD to turn on?

The Display button toggles the information shown on the LCD (or turns it off entirely). Make sure you haven't inadvertently pressed it and turned off the display. It works as follows:

  • Press once for Normal view in LCD viewfinder
  • Press twice to turn on Rule of Thirds grid lines
  • Press three times to turn off LCD display
  • Press and hold 1 sec. to decrease/increase LCD brightness

Canon A75 No startup sound & display on LCD, rest of things works fine

Think it might be your batteries. 700mah batteries are pretty weak by today's standards (most are at least 2,500 mah these days). I'm guessing your batteries are several years old? If so, they're really only meant to have a usable shelf life of a few years, whether they are used or not. Recommend trying a new set of rechargeable batteries.

LCD Display

As far as I am aware, the 400D doesn't have a live preview mode.

What you are describing is perfectly normal and is how 99% of digital SLR cameras behave.

Are you sure it used to do this?

LCD Display

If you mean you see no picture on the lcd monitor before you take the picture and see it only after you have taken it than this is normal with digital SLRs. But if you mean you see nothing on the lcd monitor after you have taken a picture ( no playback ) then either the shutter is not working , or the CMOS sensor is not working or the camera is not communicating with CF card.
