Question about HP OfficeJet r40 InkJet Printer

When printing color, only prints shades of red

I have had this printer forever with no issues. Recently, the color printing started to change .. as if the color cartridge was near empty. After only a few more print jobs and copies, it started printing in only shades of red (the black still works). I thought it was a fairly new cartridge but nonetheless, I installed a new color cartridge (HP 23) and it continues to print only in shades of red. I can't imagine I have 2 faulty catridges so I am thinking it is something with the printer (it is almost 10 years old!). Any suggestions?

I ran the cleaning function numerous times and there was no change whatsoever in the printing. It prints in black and shades of red only. Any other suggestions or has my faithful printer finally bit the dust?

I have EXACTLY the same problem. HP Deskjet 895cxi. Changed cartridges (23 like yours). Prints black fine, but only shades of red in "color" mode. Very weird. Perhaps they put out a bad batch of 23s OR perhaps they are trying to get us to buy new printers!!!

Found out I had an expired cartridge ... it had a date of 2006 even tho it was purchased during 2007. Couldn't return it so I had to buy a new one and it works great now. Thanks for everyone's response.

I had the same problem and went through TWO, count em, TWO HP cartridges before trudging off to Office Max and buying one of their knockoffs. Guess what? Yep, it worked. So, HP must've put out a bunch of bad 23 cartridges, from all the complaints I have seen online, either overfilled with red or only filled with red. What a pain at the price!

Wiping and cleaning didn't seem to work. I do believe these babies are filled wrong. I suppose if I whined enough at HP they would replace them, but I doubt it as their inclination would be to say I bought recycled (I didn't). Eh.

My HP Office Jet printer is about 10 years old. Just recently it has been printing only in shades of red. No other color except black works good? I have changed the cartridge twice and same thing, so...

Hello and Welcome to FixYa!
Sir if your printer just prints red shades then it Most likely this is a print head issue. The print head is what the cartridges sit in inside of the printer. To attempt to resolve it, do the following:
(1) Open the printer and wait for the carriage to slide over. If for some reason it does not follow these instructions:(a) Unplug the printer (b) Manually slide the carriage over until you can get the ink cartridges out.(2) Remove the ink cartridges from the print head.(3) Use cotton swabs dipped in hot water or a mix of hot water and isopropyl alcohol to thoroughly clean the print head.(4) Repeat this until there is no ink residue coming off on the cotton swab.(5) Once finished, allow to dry and replace the cartridges(6) Try to print something now
If that does not work then you have one of two possibilities:(1) One of the ink cartridges is defective and causing the error(2) If it's definitely not that, then the print head will need to be replaced.
I hope this solution helps you.Don't hesitate to let me know if you have some confusion.

When trying to print my photos on my Epson Photo R200 the images that are printed are varying shades of green and not the colours supposed to be printed. I am using a good quality gloss photo paper. Couls...

Most ink jet printers have a self cleaning you can do.
The fact that you're getting shades of green usually indicate that the red is not printing properly.

Self cleaning should take care of it

Just recently everything printed is some variation of a shade of green. Have tried to adjust color settings on the control panel of computer

Good day!clean the printer and the cartridge if it can change the color..if still not..replace with a good cartridge..if still..your printer head cannot mix anymore colors.

Printer prints colours in different colours

Either you are out of red ink or the print head is getting plugged. Most printers substitute the nearest available color when a color runs out or the head is plugged. As some shades of red are made with yellow mixed, it therefore prints only in yellow if red is unavailable.

Wont print out document in blue print

Sorry your having this issue. Because Blue is a lite shade of Black, or a combination of red yellow and green ???? Point is even if you have only a black ink cartridge, or only color cartridge. Blue should be visiable and able to print.
Good luck, jasahasch
