The engine should not be closing the choke on it's own--find out why this occurs. You may have poor fuel lines (including inside the fuel tank) that may need to be replaced. The pumper (diaphragms) components in the carburetor can get hard or cracked with age--a general re-kit and clean using carburetor cleaner spray and compressed air will fix those problems. (Watch out for tiny components in the bottom section). Check the choke operation while you are there. Make sure the muffler is not plugged with carbon and the air cleaner is clean and in good condition. Check the exhaust port in the cylinder for carbon build-up near the upper edge. Hope this helps!

Replace the diaphragms in your carb, that have hardened with age, it would be a good idea to replace the feul filter and line also.

Well after you clean it out and get it running make sure you dump some sta-bil into the gas tank next time it is going to sit idle for over 3 months. the gas turns into a shellac which glues up the carburetor.

My troybuilt yard pony riding lawnmower will start with the choke fully open and then dies immediatly when you take the choke off. It will only start and run with the choke fully open, but dies after 20-30...

Do you mean that you can start it normally using the choke (that would be choke CLOSED), but then it dies immediately when you move it to run (that would be choke OPEN)? And if you leave the choke in the starting position that it dies after 20-30 seconds?----- If I have that all right, then you definitely have a restriction in the gas supply. Drain all of the gas from the mower and don't use any old gas. If you have any more old gas (from last season) don't use it. If this mower has a gas filter, replace it. Put just a little fresh gas in the tank plus a little of the cleaner. Start it up, do that a few times if needed. Use a fuel additive such as Sea Foam to keep the gas from gumming up so fast.

Engine dies when excelerating - more gas

check the fuek lines for hole and leaks, check the fuel filter and clean if necessary. remove the carbuerator and inspect the gasket; it should be soft and flexible, if it seems hard or brittle replace it. clean the carb with carb cleaner sray (available at any local auto parts store) and compressed air. make sure you get inside the small fuel rail holes. if that doesn't work have the carb repaired at a service center or replaced.
