Question about Audio Players & Recorders

Technics DCC recorder RS DC-10 has all functions except playback. Tape rolls and does fast forward and reverse but meters don't move and there's no output in play mode. I've cleaned heads but to no avail. Recorder sat unused for a few years. It was fired up once a week or so but not rolled at all.

There is no volume control. These decks connect to an amp for output. When rolled in the "record" mode everything functions fine...meters move, tape rolls. But there is no playback whatsoever. Even though the tape is moving normally. I even tried prerecorded tapes but still no playback.

Yes the head is engaging the tape. It also flips around when the A-B direction is pushed. It briefly says it's "reading" the tape when first inserted (but this doesn't take as long as it used to) Everything on the display is perfectly normal except the meters won't move (I've tried many different tapes) and there's no audio at all. It won't play back analog cassettes either. The meters do move in record mode. Could the heads have been magnetized? It sat for a couple years with a tape in it. Although I noticed the tape doesn't touch the head unless it's in play mode.

I'll try the tapping method. I'm thinking it's an electronics problem not mechanical.

Check for worn belts or belts thats have become weak, if you take off the belts they should still have a round form. If any are egg shaped replace them. Also buy some rubber rejuvenator for you local parts supply to clean the capstan roller. This is the rolle that pulls the tape in a given direction. Do not use achocol as this dries the rubber. Rejuvenator will restore grip..

Forgot to mention another thing you can do to see if the play back head is ok.

With no tape in the unit and all connections are still connected to amp. Push the play button with cassette door opened, no tape in unit, and take a small screw driver and gently tap the play back head on its surface, you should hear the taps in your speakers, you can use your finger also to prevent damaging the playback head. But tape heads are magnetic so any noise near the tape head should produce in the speakers. If no sound is heard then you might have a bad pre-amp inside the unit, as all tapes have small signal amplifiers to amplify the sound to the output terminals before going to your main receiver. Also since its been sitting a while, make sure the mute button is operational and not causing the sound to mute. Push all the buttons down and release a few times to make sure none are sticking.

Hello. Check the volume knob. If it is set too low, you will not hear any sound. Good luck with it.

Tape is stuck inside a technic RS-TR575

This is the biggest reason why I say that the designer of these fancy little door/cradles SHOUL HAVE BEEN SHOT before invention. With a strong longnose plier break the casing of the cassette The Technics that I worked on the lid of this door can be removed from the outside Be careful with the tape itself if the recording is of great value to you that you do not stretch or break the tape. REMOVE all power batteries or mains or both ! then turn the flywheel in the OPPOSITE direction so that the tape can be unwound. You do get empty shells that can be used in the place of the one you gotta break the shell It remains a messy sort of business After you have removed the tape inspect the rolle and capstan shaft are they CLEAN and free running to prevent this from happening again. In the future it is a good habit to fast forward or rewind the tape from end to end.In the user instruction booklet some manufacturers recommend this. If you are scared to damage your machine then get this done by an expert and ask him/her to show you in future.

How do you program into the dvd that you want it to fast forward quickly? There is a way but am not sure how it is done.

You don't, you just press the FORWARD button on remote during DVD playback to 'fast forward' (pressing this button a second time during playback increases forward scan speed). The forward and reverse buttons have 'SLOW/SEARCH' printed above them on the remote. The other buttons next to them are the PREV/NEXT buttons (SKIP/INDEX).

DVD playback speed/skip/search is mostly a manual user function; it cannot be auto set.

Technics 373 Dual Cassette - Playback Stops

Suggest having a good clean and replace belts. If it stops around halfway on a C90 or near the end then there's a load problem on the take up reel, before halfway the supply reel.

Having a hard time connecting various audio components

Yes, it is a little tricky...

1) CD Changer (output) -> CD input on Amp

this is tricky... this will allow you to record to your tape deck, and control the sound via the EQ:
2) Tape Deck (tape out / recout) -> TAPE PLAYBACK on EQ
3) Tape RecOut on EQ -> Tape 1 Playback on Amp
4) Amp Tape 1 RecOut -> Tape Deck Playback / Input / RecIn
in essence, your creating a loop starting from the tape deck, going to the eq, then to the amp, then back to the tape deck to record.

Your EQ has another set of LINE IN and LINE OUT - use the second Tape 2 on the amp to create another loop. This will
allow you to control the EQ for any of the other sources.
5) LINE IN on EQ -> Tape 2 RecOut
6) Tape 2 Playback on Amp -> LINE OUT on EQ

5) Radio Tuner (output) -> Tuner input on Amp
6) DVD/VCR Combo Output -> AV/AUX on Amp

7) PC Computer... you don't have room for this. You can either use the PHONO input, and you'll have to purchase a Line Level Phono Converter
or, get a Y cable and split the signal and share with some other source.

Hope this helps.

RS-dc10 DCC replacement head

You should contact Panasonic, or Matsuchita. They can most likely give you their authorised parts dealer. You may find the head to be a little expensive.

You will have to have an experienced tech install the head for you. He will have to do a tape path alignment with the frequency response calibration.

Technics RS-TR272-no sound during play

CHECK CONNECTIONS AT THE BASE OF THE READ HEADS AS THEY HAVE A TENDENCY TO CRACK OVER A PERIOD OF USE. CAREFULLY STRIP BACK AND RESOLDER, REMEMBER TO LEAVE SOME SLACK AS THE HEADS REVOLVE ON TAPE REVERSAL.
