Canon camcorder UC 1000

using the above camcorder the signal R.EMG came up on the screen,then when trying to unload tape I lost all power.
The book talks about safety mechanism acticated(what does this mean)
I'm stuck at the moment all I want to do is download some old tapes to my PC.
Hope somebody can help an old pensioner who thinks that everything is magic.
