Question about Toshiba Satellite A215-S7437 Notebook

1 Answer

The cd drive cannot be seen on My Computer though, the dvd drive is available and functional. I have tried a million fixes and nothing works. I had this same problem years ago and a dell representative intructed me on physically taking out the drive and somehow reinstalling it. I have since forgotten how to do so. Their is a clicking noise coming from the drive when an audio cd is inserted but nothing otherwise. Any help would be appreciated, thank you very much.

The clicking noise is from the laser head moving while it tries to read the disk. And since the unit is recognized by Windows (otherwise you wouldn't be able to view dvd's) it's not a software problem. The cd part (the laser or the lens) is faulty, worn out. This is unfixable, the optical unit must be replaced.

The disc drive on my acer Aspire 5742G will not read any music cd's or dvds. I makes plenty of noise as though it is trying to open it but nothing!

The CD/DVD drive may need reseating to make proper electrical connection. Remove this drive and insert it back into the laptop.
Next try cleanibg the drive.
The laser lens maybe dirty, use a CD/DVD lens cleaning kit to clean the lens int the drive.
If this does not fix your problem then the CD/DVD drive is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Why does my lenovo insist on my having a cd rom when i have a dvd writer installed? how do I fix it so that computer recoognizes it?

I have the same situation. My computer has a
DVD-RW/CD-RW installed yet when it is empty, the computer simply recognizes it as a CD drive. However, it will automatically recognize any DVD I place in the drive. Even a blank DVD-R. So it's not really a problem for me.

Also, if you type in DEVICE MANAGER in your windows search area, it will show you all your computer's hardware and peripherals. I have Windows Vista 64 bit and in device manager it does recognize it as an ATAPI DVD under "DVD/CD-ROM DRIVES".

I haven't seen a DVD burner yet that won't play or write cd's; maybe this is standard.

I wouldn't worry about it as long as it performs the functions (play/burn DVD's?)

Hope this helps.8a17955.jpgb9e40e6.jpg

My cd/dvd (sh-s182d )rom read cd only but it wont response

CD/DVD ROM drives like yours employs two lasers to work properly, one for CD read function and the other for DVD read function.

It seems that your laser for DVD reading is either dirty or damaged.

Try an optical drive cleaner, if that does not fix it, you are going to have to replace the drive. If you have warranty then replace it or have it fixed. However, if your warranty has expired then the best thing to do is to buy a new one. They are not expensive these days so the price difference between fixing it and buying new should not be huge.

A lens cleaner disk should be available from most computer shops.

I assume you have proper software for DVD video playback like PowerDVD, VLC media player etc.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ230P. It has a Matshita UJ-842D. It was working fine until today. The drive shows up under 'My Computer' and 'Device Manager' however when I put in a CD or DVD it doesn't do...

Sounds like it is your power supply going. I know this sounds way off base. But I have seen it many times. First this happens with the CD or DVD as they have are lower on the list for power allocation than other devices for power. If this is it next the hard drive will stop responding. This has been my experience in these matters. It might be the drive but I would say 70% chance of power supply.30% chance of drive.

DVD/CD-ROM Drive just stopped reading all discs

Have you tried using a good quality dvd cleaner? Alot of times a dirty laser will cause this problem. After cleaning try using a known good dvd and see if it works. If not check your device manager to see if the drive is functioning properly. If there is a yellow ! then the drive either has a corrupt driver or it has died. You can replace it fairly cheap as a dvd/cd burner can be replaced for around $45 max. Hope this helps.

No CD /DVD Drive Icon

I checked the specifications on the Acer 9410Z, and verified that it ships with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium.

This is actually a very common problem in Windows Vista and tends to occur for a few different reasons. One notable issue is anti-virus and anti-spyware programs that perform a system scan and remove any instances of viruses and/or malware.

Without going into too much detail there is quick fix available from Microsoft at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

Scroll down to "Fix it for me", and just click "Fix." This will run a quick installation, and then ask you to restart your computer. If it doesn't ask you, then restart it manually.

Your CD/DVD drive should now show up in My Computer, and should be recognized by all programs.

Hope this helps!

My drive wont read or anything

Go here: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=DIM_CEL_1100&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid

Select what operating system you have (xp or vista) then scroll down to where it says "CD/DVD" and choose your specific cd-rom drive model.

Download the firmware and run it. It should function after that.

(Also if you don't know your Cd-Rom drive model, right click on My Computer> Properties> Hardware Tab> Device Manager> Scroll down to DVD/CD-ROM drives and check out the model number.) Hope this helps! :)
