Question about GE GSS22KGMBB / GSS22KGMWW / GSS22KGMCC Side by Side Refrigerator

2 Answers

My freezer frosts over bigtime. The fresh food section is always warm because im sure all the frost doesn't allow the fan to move air very well. I have a GE gss22kgmww. I have looked everywhere for a defrost timer and can not find one, is it controlled by the motherboard or am I crazy? How can I fix my fridge cheaply?

Pull the refrig out and remove the 8 " x 10 " panel . Behind this panel , is the main control board . Unplug the refrig . Remove the BLUE plug from the board , with 3 larger wires going to it . Looking at the blue plug , the sequence will be wire1,wire2,space,wire3 . Get a short piece of insulated wire , and strip about 1/4 inch from each end . Insert 1 end into wire2 , and the other into wire3 . Plug the refrig back in . After about 3 min , look in the freezer , at the bottom , behind the crisper , look for a red glow . If no red glow , unplug the refrig , and reassemble the plug and cover . This no glow , indicates a shorted defrost heater WR51X10101 . It is also advisable to replace the defrost thermostat ( pt. number WR50X10068 ) when replacing the heater . To access these parts , you will have to remove the inside rear wall of the freezer . The heater , is at the bottom of the coils , held on with 2 screws , and the thermostat , is the 1 " cylinder , with a blue and pink wire going to it , clipped on the top left of the coils .
If you do get a red glow , then the # 4 thermistor is bad . This tells the main control board , the temp of the coils , if they need defrosted , when they are thru defrosting . This thermistor is the 1 " long , torpedo looking piece , clipped on the top left of the coils , with 2 white wires going to it . Part number WR55X10025 . It would be advisable to also replace the # 5 thermistor , located at the bottom of the freezer , slightly in front of the drain , also with 2 white wires going to it , slid into a housing . This thermistor , is the freezer thermistor , which tells the control board , the freezer temp , when to cycle off , associated with the fan speed also .

If you unit is not defrosting there is four thing's it could be.the defrost heater's,the thermal switch, bad wire or bad control board.to find out you will nead to first remove the back panal in the freezer.if your lucky you can remove light cover and get to the screw's holding the panal on.if not you may have to remove the ice maker, ice bucket and the ice despence motor to get to the screw's.with the panal removed, you will see the coil's.at the top of the coil's you will see the wire connection's for the defrost heater.ther is a wire that run's up the left side of the coil's and a wire that run's up the right side of the coil's.follow the line's up to were thy connect and disconnect them.at this point you will nead a continueaty meter to check the heater.if it is good than you nead to look at top of coil's on the right side and youu will see a round disk. this is the thermal switchand you nead to unplug the wire connection's and check disk while it is still frosen.if it check's good and all wire's look good than you have a bad control board.at this time you can take a hair dryer and remove the excees frost.you will nead to put towel's in bottom of freezer and over drain line to colect water.after frost is removed you can put unit back together.your frig will work good for 12-15 day's before it will build up again.that will give you time to get part.

My fridge part of fridge/freezer doesn't work

Post the model number of the refrigerator. Defrost freezer behind where the cold air circulates with a hair drier. (unplug power first!) Most times when a refrigerator side stops cooling it is because the freezer evaporator behind the panel in the back of freezer (most times) has become blocked by frost=> SEE PHOTO Most times the panel before you see the frosted covering the evaporator will begin to show a layer of frost building=> SEE PHOTO (Click each photo to enlarge.) Sometimes the fresh food section of the refrigerator side will warm because ice or frost will block the damper from moving that regulates temperatures in the fresh food section. Sometimes the damper is defective and sometimes the sensor that controls the damper movement is defective. For these reasons it is important that you provide your model numbers so someone knows just what type refrigerator you have to cover all of the possibilities of what may be wrong causing the warming of the fresh food section and soon the freezer section will also begin to warm. The most likely cause are the defrost control, ADC Adaptive Defrost Control, defrost heater, defrost thermostat, air damper and air damper sensors in that order. Let me know what you have and I will try to identify just what may be happening, Thanks Sea Breeze

Fridge not cold but freezer fine

Can you see frost buildup on the freezer walls? Can you find the model number around the fresh food section door? If you unplug the refrigerator and then remove the freezer panel that has a fan behind panel do you see this? Defective Defrost Heater
8_30_2012_6_04_56_am.jpg

With the freezer panel removed can you tell me exactly what type of frost pattern you have? Can you email me a photo of the frost pattern you do have?
Evaporator Frost Pattern Only Two Rows

Another possible problem is your model may have a Auto Damper
that could be stuck because of frost blocking the damper from opening and closing that regulate fresh food section temperatures. If you need help I will be here to answer so please respond and search for your model number so I can possibly look your model and see what type of other features that can cause the freezer to be fine and fresh food section to be warming up, Thanks Sea Breeze

MY FRIG DOES NOT SEEM TO BE WORKING IT IS WARM

If your freezer seems to be working, then the problem is probably in the freezer section. If you remove the inner shield of the freezer and see a lot of ice around the evaporator coil then your defrost circuit is not working. If the fan is not operating, it will not blow cold air into the fresh food side. If the cooling tubes between the freezer and fresh food side are blocked or frosted up that would not allow the cold air to pass.
Since you say it is an Amana, I would suspect either the fan or the defrost circuit.

Refrigerator doesn't get cold

Hi,

Thank you for contacting fixya.com.

Check the coils on the rear of the refrigerator and make sure they are clean and dust free. Also check the back wall or floor of the freezer section for frost. Check the evaporator fan to see if it is running. Check the condenser coils under the unit for blockage from dust. Check the condenser fan under the unit to see if it is running. If you have frost in the freezer there is a problem with the defrost system and the freezer will start to warm eventually as well as the fresh food section. If that is the problem you can check the defrost terminator, defrost heater/s, and the defrost timer or adaptive defrost control If used on your unit or the main control board if so equipped. Also check the freezer to ensure it isn't over loaded with food stuff, reason being air must flow freely threw out the entire refrigerator in order for the thermostat to work correctly.

Defrost the freezer by disconnecting the power to the refrigerator and letting it sit for at least 24 hours with both the doors open to allow the frost to melt completely but it will build up again in 1-2 weeks and start the warming up again.

The motor is running, but the freezer is just cool and the ref. is warm. Some osf the lights are on and some are not.

Hi,

The cooling coils for both the freezer and fresh food sections takes place in the freezer behind the panel. The fan in the freezer blows the air throughout the freezer and into the fresh food side.

First check to make sure the fan is running inside the freezer, you will be able to hear it when you open the freezer door. Then check to make sure the fan on the outside is running. You can tell by pulling off the grille on the bottom front of the refrigerator and feeling air come out on the left side, it should be warm air and not too hot.

If these are okay then look in the freezer behind the food and shelves. Near the bottom of the freezer look for a frost build up on the back panel. If there is a frost build up then you have a defrost problem. If you see a little frost on the panel that means there is a lot behind the panel that is blocking the cool air from flowing.

Let me know what you see and I will help you from there.

Frosting up in the freezer and not cooling in the food compartment kenmore 363.9557852

It sounds like you have a defrost problem.

All the cooling for both sections takes place in the freezer behind the back wall. A fan back there distributes the cold air throughout the freezer and fresh food section. Every 8 - 10 hours a heater comes on for about 20 minutes to eliminate the frost from the evaporator coils back there. If this defrost cycle fails the frost will build up to a point of no air flow so the fresh food side and most of the freezer start to warm up.

The best way to take care of this is to turn it off and unload the freezer, take the shelves out and the screws holding the back panel inside the freezer out. Remove the back panel from the freezer. Use hot water and a hair dryer to unthaw the ice and frost, you will need lots of towels as the melting will bring lots of water on to the floor. Once the frost is gone you will need to install this part WR51X443. The picture below shows it. The kit contains new heaters and thermostat.

The top freezer works great. The bottom refrigerator will not cool. The fan still comes on.

Hi,

The cooling coils for both the fresh food section and the freezer are located in the freezer section. The fan moves the air to where it is needed.

If cooling is adequate in the freezer there is an air flow problem between the two. Be sure your freezer control is set to a midpoint setting, if the numbers are 1 to 5 set to 3, this will adjust the damper between the two sections to allow flow to the bottom.

Check for air restrictions in the ducts, look at the ceiling in the fresh food section you will see a couple of square holes make sure nothing is stuck in there like ice, this could block the air. You can also see these from the top if you remove the food in the freezer and the back panel from inside the freezer.

If these are all ok look for excessive frost on the back panel of the freezer, this would indicate a failure in the defrost cycle.
