Either the batteries do not have enough power to do this, or there is debris on the shutter or zoom and can be cleaned with rubbing alcohol and cotton swab. Or lastly, the software/firmware needs to be updated. The manufaacture will fix it for $50. You may get lucky enough to find a software update on the web, but they are rare and hard to find and use.

There is no power button. Simply press the shutter release button halfway to turn the camera on. The camera will shut off after a few seconds of inactivity.

Camera shuts off after pressing shutter

Manually turn off the camera, remove the batteries, press the shutter release a few times draining any residual charge. Replace the batteries give it a go. It the issue continues it well may be something wrong with the shutter release.

How to release a stuck sutter on canon 400d

Wow, four days ago.

I would think that the camera has dropped the shutter by now.

There is a mode in the camera that holds the mirror up out of the way for sensor cleaning but this is defaulted as soon as the power is shut off and then turned back on again.

Or the camera was set in manual mode "Bulb" and is waiting for the next command from the photographer to "drop" the shutter "takes a second press of the shutter button.

The lens may be loose (unlocked) and giving a bad command to the camera.

The Canon 40D has a shutter capable of 60,000 actuation so if you are close to this I'd say the shutter has been shot out of it.

Also sometimes the shutter release button sticks and gives the feeling or appearance of a stuck shutter.

Shutter switch also known as a release button have been an issue sometimes where dirt and oil from a person hands get down into the button.

To release shut the camera off, take the battery out, remove and reinstall the lens, shift the taking mode to "P" program or full automatic green box.

I installed new batteries in my camera. I turn the on knob and camera does not operate. Something wrong with power system Contacts are clean, new batteries Nikon N2020

"Turn the on knob"? You turn on the N2020 by lightly pressing the shutter release button. Do the meter indicator LEDs inside the viewfinder light up when you lightly press the shutter release button?

Nikon d90, blinking "Error"

You "release the shutter" by pressing the shutter release button, often called the shutter button. That's the button you press to take a picture :-)

The camera may or may not return to normal after that. If it doesn't, remove the battery, then put it back in and turn the camera on again. Try removing and reattaching the lens (with the power off). If the problem persists, have a certified Nikon tech look at it.

Mirror locked up on Nikon F75

Try pressing and releasing the shutter button. If that doesn't do anything, then turn the camera off and on and press and release the shutter button. If that still doesn't do anything, then turn the camera off, remove and reinsert the batteries (or a fresh set, if readily available), turn the camera on, and press and release the shutter button.

I ran across a Nikon N80 last week which hadn't been used for many moons. I tried the shutter and the mirror promptly locked up. It took about half a dozen tries, but the mirror eventually shook loose or whatever, and the camera now works perfectly.

If the above procedure doesn't do it, then you may have to take it in to a good camera shop for a CLA (clean-lubricate-adjust), the camera equivalent of an automobile tune-up.
