Mower set under carport for 3 years, i replaced the fuel, but can't get it started. it will run while spraying carb cleaner into carb but quits once that's burned off. it's an lx277 twin cylinder kaw. fuel is squirting from fuel pump? what's wrong?

I have a 1990 ford f-150 whent to start it and nothing No fuel pump hum nothing I replced fuel filter and 2 relays and fuel safety not popped up all the engine does is crank over and thats it.

an easy way to know that is to start engine and give it a shot of starting fluid ,if you can keep it running by this method I would replace diaphragm.

How primmer bulb works


actually the bulb primer pumps a little gas into the carburetor. if it is torn or worn out the replacement is inexpensive and easy to replace. Ebay sells them for anywhere from 3 to 5 dollars. I replaced mine and still had hard starting and throbbing. I used it this way for quite some time until it finally would not start. I had been spraying the carb with cleaner for quite a while as well. Well I finally fixed it and here is how. You have to remove the filter and housing, then the frame that attaches to the carburetor and be careful not to damage the gasket. Once removed, look at the gasket and on the left side you will see a cut channel leading to a hole. Spray that hole with carb cleaner really well. Reassemble all and the mower will run like new.

check for spark then spray a little carb cleaner or starting fluid in the carb if it fires its a fuel problem filter pump carb

Mower started and ran great for about 50 mins. and then stopped. I added gas as it appeared to run empty. It started back up, but would only stayed running for a few seconds, before turning off again. ...


You did not mention whether your mower has a 2-cycle or 4-cycle engine. 2-cycle engine may require 2-cycle oil mixed with the gas to lubricate the pistons/cylinders.

4-cycle engines do not require mixing gas & oil as they have a separate sump for oil. These engines are quite easy to maintain and will last for many years. The most common problem is the fuel delivery system. If you allow the fuel to run low, debris sitting at the bottom of the tank is picked up and can clog the strainer (if so equipped). Check for a clogged in-line fuel filter and replace as needed. Occasional cleaning of the fuel inlet and strainer may be necessary; some disassembly is required. The carburetor jets also suffer from blockage usually caused by varnish residue from gasoline if the mower was allowed to sit for long periods of time without the fuel being drained or at least treated with some type of fuel stabilizer (Sta-Bil is one). If you have time, open up the carburetor and spray all the fuel passages with Gumout Carburetor cleaner to dissolve said varnish. Jiggle the choke mechanism while spraying to dislodge carbon build-up at the butterfly valve. And if you have a compressor, blow out these passages with pressurized air. Poking them with wire is a NO-NO. If it has a paper-element filter and it looks like you can plant grass on it, it is time to replace them. Does it have a re-usable/washable air filter? Clean the filter element with an air filter cleaner solution (or dishwash detergent) and re-oil (I use K&N filter oil) once dry.

Always use clean gas (your gas container may be contaminated over the years) and an ounce of STP carb cleaner per gallon of gas usually keeps things clean.

Mower starts fine but conks out in about a minute or two.I changed the air filter but it still stalls a minute after starting. toro mower is about 2 years old


Recheck your fuel selector to make sure it is ON. Also if this is the first start of the season there may be old gas / debris in the bottom of the float bowl. One other area to check is the bottom of the gas tank / fuel outlet port of the tank. I don't remember if this model had an in-line fuel filter but also something to check if installed.

This is listed under Toro Mower with power tools that has a 6.5 Briggs and Stratton engine.



To clean the carb passages you will need to do the following.

(FUEL SELECTOR OFF)

1. The adjustment screw on the side of the carb that has a spring on it. You need to count the number of turns it takes turning it clockwise until it just comes up snug NOT TIGHT. Then remove it.

2, Remove the float bowl and dump the contents.

3. Spray carb cleaner in the adjustment screw hole.

4. Disconnect the fuel hose to the carb and spray carb cleaner in the brass tubing hole. The cleaner should be exiting via the float needle. Make sure float assy is down....

5. Connect the fuel line. (use a spray paint can lid and catch the fuel in this step. FUEL SELECTOR on. Catch fuel exiting carb. Lift the float to a LEVEL position and feul flow should stop. DO NOT FORCE IT! Gentle lift only.

FUEL Selector off.

6. Install float bowl

7. Re-install adjustment screw/needle/spring in the side of the carb. Turn it until it just snugs up.. then back it off the number of turns it took to initially close it before removal.

FUEL Selector on... wait 30 seconds..

7. Start mower.

That should do it.

Fuel Starvation - Float Bowl Carburetor
1) remove air filter assembly
*be cautious of tearing the mounting gasket. If it does tear, you HAVE to replace it. It is part of the priming system
2) remove the float bowl fastener. This is the main jet
3) carefully remove the float bowl, the rubber o-ring/gasket will not be able to be used if it is removed, you WILL have to replace it
4) using a spray 'carb cleaner'
spray up thru the center of the carburetor
spray and clean the main jet with cleaner and 'tag' wire
(tag wire is very thin, and can be used to clean the hole in the center of the main jet)
5) clean any debris from inside the bowl or carb body
6) re-install bowl and center bolt, air filter assembly

*if you need gaskets, your Briggs dealer can supply. The kit is cheaper than individual gaskets, and all the parts needed to finish the above repair are in the kit.

My mower starts fine, and idles smoothly, but once I start moving, occasionally it will sputter, and the engine will lag a little, then will rev back up and then run smoothly for several more minutes...


Probably a dirty carburetor. Try some carb cleaner in the gas tank. If this is a Briggs engine, and the carb sits on top of the fuel tank, often times the pick up tube will become clogged.. You may have to remove the carb and spray clean it with carb cleaner spray can.
Also, spray the linkage on the carb.

Craftsman mower will not start without starting fluid


Sounds like you have water / debris in your carb fuel bowl. Using spray carb cleaner will only work if you remove the bowl and clean the carb jets. Also, you could have water in the gas tank as well. First, remove your air filter, then remove the 3 screws that attach your filter bracket to your carburator and mower. Take off your fuel line at the carb and drain all your gas into a clear jar. If it looks very yellow, cloudy, or see water in the bottom of the jug, change your gas. Using a half inch socket wrench, after gas line is disconnected, remove the fuel bowl and clean with carb cleaner. Also, examine the bolt you just removed. There are 2 jets in the side and one at the end. Using the carb cleaner, make sure they are clean as well. Use the carb cleaner extension tube to spray up inside the bottom center of the carb, where the bolt threads, to clean that area as well. After all this make sure your float assembly is intact and reassemblt the bowl to the carb and reattach the the fuel line. finish by reattaching the air filter support bracket making sure the gasket between the carb and the bracket isn't damaged. Also, never use last year gas, alway buy freah every year.

Toro recycler will run until primed gas is consumed.


The problem is that the gas that sat in the carb all winter glazed it over and gummed it up. Begin by going to any auto parts store, like an aiutozone, and getting a bottle of carb. cleaner. Seafoam is one I use. Add it to your gas, one ounce per gallon of gas. Also, pick up a can of engine starting spray.

Remove the air filter and spray the engine starting spray into the air intake. Pull start the engine and give it additional squirts of engine starting spray until it runs smoothly.

Poulan 6.75 Lawn mower will not start


Remove spark plug, clean and dry. Replace plug. Remove air filter. Spray WD-40 into carb opening; one second blast. Turn over engine, (pull handle). Engine should start briefly and run for 3 seconds.  If not, you are not getting spark to spark plug. If engine starts, you have a dirty carb and you can buy a rebuild kit from manufacture.
