Drive Letter changes can be made from the Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management page. Under Storage, Disk Management, the volumes (drives) are listed. Right click for properties, then change drive letter.

I am curious about why a particular letter drive is needed. Windows will default assign the drive letters. It lists the Drive Icon, Drive Name (or Type) and Drive Letter...OS (C:), CD Drive (F:), etc.

Why does it need to be 'F:' ?
Disconnect the FreeAgent drive, and restart your computer.
Open "My Computer".
Does it already show an 'F:' drive?

Connect the FreeAgent drive.
Click Start
Right-mouse-click on My Computer
Click Manage
Double-click Storage
Double-click Disk Management (local)
Right-mouse-click on the G: drive
Choose Change Drive Letter, and select 'F'.

SOURCE: computer not recognising my external hard drive????

Hello

My apologies if this message finds you long after posting this problem , but I am currently working through a backlog of problems that never got answered and hopefully this info can still be of use if not now possibly in future.

Please download Disc Digger HERE. This is a free tool you can use that works very well and there is no installation required, just run the program once you downloaded it.

Once you have connected the memory disk / hdd to the computer , run the program.

On the program , select the dig deep option for accidentally deleted files or dig deeper for a formatted drive. Then select the disk you want to do the recovery on and run the program.

The data will be displayed and you can recover it from there. This will only work if the card has not been used since the data was lost. Save the files to a location on the computer hard drive and not back to the disk it is recovering from as this will overwrite the other pictures that still needs to be recovered.

Some of the properties of the files may become lost in the recovery but the pictures should be fine.

You will also only be able to recover certain file types using this method.

Feel free to ask if you need more assistance.

Kind Regards
Andrea

Click Start, type Device Manager in the Search box
Click Device Manager from the returned list.
Click Disk Drives from the list of hardware
Right-click the USB external hard drive with the issue, and click Uninstall.
After the hard drive is uninstalled, unplug the USB cable.
Wait for 1 minute and then reconnect the USB cable. The driver should automatically load
Check for the USB drive in Windows Explorer

Note: Connecting your USB external hard drive into a non-powered USB hub can cause a lack of enough power to operate the external drive. Instead, plug it directly into your computer.

Have you tried connecting it with the Firewire cable that came with it? (your pc may not have the correct port) or connecting it with a different usb cable?
Has the drive been dropped? it has a protection system which shuts the drive down when it is dropped. you may need to put the HDD into a different caddy or plug it directly into a desktop pc's motherboard to retrieve you data.
I hope this helps.

Iomega eGo 1TB USB 3.0 Portable portable harddisk 500GB. while connected to PC show an error on desktop "insufficient power on USB hub port" . pls suggest

Few different things are possibilities.
1. Are you connecting the device via USB 3.0 to the USB 3.0 adapter on the computer? 2. Try switching out your USB 3.0 cable for a different one. 3. If you are using the USB 2.0 instead. Make sure you are using the USB Y cable for the device and not just a standard USB 2.0 straight cable. Using the USB Y cable. Plug the cable into the device first, then make sure to plug both USB's into the computer starting with the short side USB then the longer side USB second. Also try using the USB's on the back side of the computer as they will supply more power than the USB's on the front of the computer.

I have a brand new usb flashdrive and i have no idea how to put the story im writeing in it. can some one help me?

All you do is plug the drive in and save the file containing the story to it instead of your hard drive. Use file save as and look for your drive in (It should show up as a removable disk) the drop down menu.

Don't worry, if it works. You are talking about external HD with USB connector?
The computer assigns the drive letters in 'operational order' and it doesn't matter in which order they go. In WinXP - system the drive letters 'rearrange' after reboot.

The brand of your HD is Verbatim, so it should not show up as Toshiba in the Device Manager. Your computer is detecting another device.

Please do not rely on the Device Manager, you have to check the Disk Management instead. If the HD did not show up in the Disk Management, try connecting the HD into another USB ports of the problem computer. It could only be the USB ports of the problem computer is bad.

How many computers do you have? If you have 3 PCs and only one computer is having a problem, then you might need to update the USB driver of the problem computer.

Have a great day!

Plugged in, J drive showing on computer but no means of accessing files to the hard drive? How do I do that please?

In Windows? Try volume manager (admin. tools or via rightclicking on the drive, which you should totally have tried first.) If there are already files on it but they don't show, perhaps that computer doesn't know how to access the filesystem used initially, and you need to get the appropriate filesystem (or a compatible likeness) installed on the machine at hand.

Often USB hard drives come preformatted to FAT32, but that filesystem can't handle files over 2GB, so you almost certainly need to install NTFS or something better instead.
