Question about RCA HDLP50W151 50" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

My picture keeps changing colors and images are shifting around on the screen. Example is say there is a person on theTV picture, well it will glitch and move part of his face to to oppostie side of the screen and the color will change and pulsate. This doesn't always happen the TV will work fine for a while this problem comes and goes.

I fixed the The problem and it cost only 5 dollars.
I took the back of the TV off and used a electronic air spray can and dusted off everything from the fan, the boards and the lamp, then I double checked that every wire was pushed all the way in, and after that I put the TV back together and It looks better that it has in 3 years.
Everyone I talked to told be it was my color wheel or my light engine but really it was just a lot of built up dust!

Do you hear any strange noises when the color is shifting? If so then the possibility is the color wheel is failing. The color wheel failing after a few years is not so uncommon. The unfortunate part is you would need RCA part number 212184 for the color wheel and it is no longer available. The complete light engine is the only thing that appears to be available and that part number is 261589. I would have a technician look at the TV to verify my findings. Please take a few moments to rate my answer. Thank you...

Possibly a signal issue. Does this happen while watching DVD's or anything else?

Colors are separated on the display. Each color is shifted to the right from the preceeding color. Looks like a bad 3d pic w/o the glasses

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

f0900cb.jpg
Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

2c07611.pngSolution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

There is a wave in the picture only in the upper left hand 1/4 or the screen. The rest of the screen is sharp. You get the colors separated and thus double image.

Projection TV sets have several common problems listed below.

Problem #1) Convergence

Symptoms:

  • Screen Looks 3-D
  • Colors wont align
  • Screen may look distorted
  • No Audio/Video - makes a chirping sound.

My pictures display poor image quality on the screen or when you print them out.

PhotoPC 800 captures images in 24-bit color (16.7 million colors). Your pictures will not display maximum image quality if your monitor or computer's video controller doesn't support this color depth. You may need to upgrade your system to achieve the best possible image quality. If your pictures look better on the screen than when you print them out, you may need to upgrade your printer. An EPSON Stylus ink jet printer, for example, provides excellent image quality. If you used drag and drop to insert your pictures, they may appear grainy. Try importing them into your documents instead.
